Unearthing Rosewood: An Archaeology of Violence and Hope

Published 2020-09-24
Rosewood was a prosperous African American community hard-won from the swampy hammocks of north Florida. Although the town was destroyed in 1923, the community continued, scattered across the state of Florida and beyond. Now, nearly 100 years after this tragic event the story of Rosewood remains shrouded from public view. Those who have heard of Rosewood are rarely aware of the community’s deeper history, or its relation to other places across the state. Dr. González-Tennant will discuss the role of archaeology and geospatial sciences in unearthing Rosewood’s complex history. In addition to describing how digital technologies aid traditional archaeological methods, he’ll discuss the importance of outreach and its ability to support a public conversation on racial reconciliation.

This event is funded by the Florida Humanities Florida Talks: At Home! program.

Very fascinating. I will have to check out your virtual site. I used to live in Gainesville and visit Cedar Key. I don't think I knew about Rosewood at that time. However, I have since seen the movie and have a book on it (but never found time to read it yet) several years ago. Thanks for all your work. I went to FTU (now UCF) back in early 1970s. I have been doing genealogy for almost 40 years so appreciate how you used that in your research. Keep up the good work!
  • They took the people's land and didn't give them not one penny for it as of today. 😭😭
  • I'd like to hear something - anything! - about the Rosewood Stars; their uniforms, where exactly they played/practiced...but yeah, shit was fucked-up back then.

Awful sad event in history ...These people were just getting on with their lives ... Doing well for themselves..and this one event changed how their ancestors lived for decades after...im just disgusted ...im from the UK... And it was just as bad here maybe worse ...im glad most people do not act like this anymore...imagine what Rosewood would be like now ? So sad ...and im glad its at least been acknowledged now ... 🤷🏻‍♀️ ♥️ love to all who are from the descendants of Rosewood!! 🌹🌹🌹

How can there be reconcilliation without reparations for several centuries of anti-Blackness?

I’m only here cause my heart telling me something about slavery. I’m from Chiefland right down the road from Rosewood. This situation is so tragic cause it wiped out a very important part of history that can never be told. God is good though and Jesus will definitely be back.
  • Funmy this guy uses a the pogrum of jews in russia as opposed to holomodor. Funny how it always seems to be the same narrative even though history is littered with examples of this. Something starting to not pass the smell test here,,
