Go to a big box store and buy a rod the same diameter or a little smaller. Use a belt sander to approximate the actual end configuration.. Then just do a guesstimate...say 1/2" longer. Put it in and rotate it. Hopefully too long. Grind a little off one end and try a gain. Sneak up on it.
