Joe Montana finished the game completing 18 of 31 passes for 201 yards and a touchdown, with one interception, while also rushing for 16 yards. Lions quarterback Gary Danielson finished his only career playoff game completing 24 of 38 passes for 236 yards, but was intercepted five times. Lions running back Billy Sims was the top rusher of the game with 20 carries for 116 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught four passes for 26 yards. That’s a classic playoff performance!!!
  • Gary Danielson threw FIVE INTS and the Lions still should've won. Whole different game 40 years ago. Shoutout Billy Sims, the original running #20 for Detroit (don't wanna snub the great Lem Barney).

I was lucky enough to have 49ers season tickets in 1983 as a 15 year old. I was at this game. The 49ers were lucky they won this game because of the missed field goal. Great memories.

I'm glad i wasn't old enough to have watched this game live. 5 ints and 2 missed FGs wow!

Lions: "Wide right!" Bills: "We feel your pain."

That one was a heartbreaker. The lions really should’ve won that one… if Danielson didn’t have a career bad day, and if Murray, one of the best kickers at that time, could make a (for the time) difficult but reasonably plausible field goal.

The missed field goal was the most devastating as a 45 year lion fan

Oh damn! I remember this game. Watched this when I was a kid with our older neighbors after we had finished playing football outside. I recall the game was going back and forth with the Lions almost pulling off the upset. We were all pulling for Detroit. They shoulf have won. Danielsen kept thowing interceptions and the missed FGs. Their defense played well during that game. We were bummed out when Murray missed the FG at the end. Weird, he was a long time good kicker too.

I watched this back in '83 and haven't seen it since. I only remembered that it came down to a missed field goal. The shot of Walsh letting out a sigh of relief looks very familiar. I had forgotten about all the interceptions.
