The Edinburgh Tattoo is a celebration of pipes , drums & dancers from all over the world , from America's , Asia , Africa , Europe & Oceania . Held every year in august for 3 weeks on the Edinburgh Castle Concoarse . Each night would end the show with the castle lit up and a huge fireworks display .
  • Every time I hear a pipe band playing The Black Bear my wee Scottish heart swells.

I'm lucky enough to have experienced the Tattoo, both, as a Soldier and a Civilian.

The Edinburgh Military Tattoo was originally started as an exhibition for British military pipe bands but has evolved into an event that includes bands from all over the world. For example, my uncle's alma mater, The Citadel in Charleston, SC, has had their pipe band invited to the tattoo multiple times. That's why they are all wearing different uniforms. This is the massed performance where all the bands perform together. Throughout the rest of the night each band gets to perform individually or in smaller groups. And they are performing at Edinburgh Castle. I haven't been yet, but it is definitely on my bucket list.
  • I can hear this every year from my house💕 It’s amazing. You should listen to ‘Bagpipes Bands performing "Amazing Grace" LIVE’.. it’ll blow I away🥰 Much love to you and the fam from Scotland💙🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I have been to the Edinburgh military tattoo. It absolutely blew me away. I was sat on those stands with chills running down my spine.

Imagine I’m a small child in Scotland living on the Royal mile. The pipers are coming back from rehearsal and I hear the trum trum of the drums, and then they would start to play the bagpipes. I’m nearly falling out my window to see them and my heart is exploding with joy.
  • My Ex and I, were actually in the arena, at this Tattoo. We spent 3 days in Edinburgh, catching the Fringe Festival and the Tattoo. It was brilliant 3 days, the atmosphere in the arena was breath-taking, truly amazing. I hope to go again in the future, tickets do sell out quickly for it though.

Most of these guys are real soldiers in Highland Dress uniform - there is no costume involved here! Different regiments will have different tartans, headdress, etc. The 'arena' is constructed every summer on Edinburgh Castle Esplanade, and dismantled again each autumn. I think bagpipes have to be filled with air, which is then squeezed out between elbows and bodies through the long pipes or drome, while the notes are played on a woodwind-like instrument known as a chanter, which is also affixed to them.

Beautiful setting and those pipers are well drilled. Enjoyable video 💂‍♂️💂‍♂️💂‍♂️
  • My country Scotland is an amazing place, and very beautiful. Everyone is welcome here
  • When you don't expose yourself to 'other' music this is why you are amazed at these wonderful sounds. There is oh so much more music out there than 'today's' music you hear on the local radio or on your main stream music from whatever country you are from. I love this video! Even though my prefrence is latin tipico! Any and all music is wonderful if it 'lifts' you up and gives you 'chills'! All music is beautiful...no matter where it comes from!

I will be attending The World Pipe Band Championship 2024 at Glasgow green 10-18 August and I can hardly wait. The sight and sound of a Pipe Band is unique and amazing!
  • The costume is our National dress which is tartan kilts and tartan plaids which are over the shoulder. Each different tartan is associated with a Scottish family name which each had their own individual tartan. The event you watched takes place annually in Edinburgh Castle and is named The Edinburgh Tattoo.
  • When I watch American parades (i.e. Macy's Thanksgiving) I'm always surprised at how few pipe & drum bands there are. I'm Canadian & bagpipes are a staple at virtually all parades (I LOVE bagpipes). When you watch a massed pipe band in person the skirl of the pipes goes right through you. If you ever have a chance to go - do it! BTW, it's the custom if someone is 'piped in" (i.e. a retirement) that the piper is given a shot of whiskey. Thanks for playing this & your comments.
  • that is a spectacular and brilliant show... I am french and always enjoyed to listen both the civil and military bagpipes band..
  • @scousemouse9715
As a Protestant in Liverpool we had the Orange Lodge and the May Queen parade. The bagpipes always led the parade. Shivers down the spine and tears of joy.

Great reaction, my family and I go to the Edinburgh Military Tattoo every year and love it, I worked at it for many years and the atmosphere is fantastic. There are military bands from all over the world take part and it is for the most part televised if you ever want to watch the whole event. Edinburgh Castle is the most fantastic venue for the event ❤🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
