Plundered WW2 Shipwrecks: Inside The World's Biggest Grave Robbery

Published 2024-05-11
In what is being called ‘The world’s biggest grave robbery’, more than 40 shipwrecks serving as mass graves to thousands of World War II soldiers have been illegally plundered by salvage crews who may still be roaming free.

One of the most perplexing and wide-ranging marine mysteries of our time unfolds through the visceral first-hand accounts of reporters, scuba divers, marine archaeologists and scrap ironworkers. They recount the efforts to understand what happened and why, while searching for justice. The heinous crimes against history are dissected by an Indonesian investigative journalist, who recalls and uncovers an unlikely chain of circumstances that helped set the stage for these atrocities.

"Revered" historical sites are only revered by the cultures who are powerful enough to protect the areas around them. Eventually all of the so-called "revered" sites fall to time and newly grown cultures.

This is disgusting. Salvaging any ww2 wrecks is unthinkable. The family members of sailors, pilots, etc that went down during that time would be disgusted. They are war graves not man made reefs, test boats for weapons, none of that. Its basically the same concept if a group of people went into a cemetery and just started digging. Its grave robery simple as that

I remember watching an episode of “The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau” in which the Calypso crew went diving on WW2 shipwrecks in Truk Lagoon. It was fascinating and eerie (and thanks for the reminder, now I’m going to see if it’s available online somewhere) Edit: I did find that episode here on YouTube (and as an added bonus, it’s narrated by Rod Serling)

I'm not surprised.anything that isn't under lock and key or guarded will eventually be taken by somebody.
  • It's Monday May 27th, happy Memorial day from Boston Mass. Boston born 1960 I owe my freedoms to these men lost, I'm eternally grateful for them, it's sad but I know they'd want us to celebrate our freedoms. God bless all who served and all who serve today.🇺🇸🇬🇧

5:23. The smell of charred flesh from cutting metal submerged in the sea for 80 years? BS.

Animal bones/remains? I call bullsh*t. Truth be told, I'd venture to guess they never even went to that cemetery.
  • You have to wait 1000 years, then it's not grave robbing, it's Archeology.
