Trying to Daily Drive a $300k Rolls-Royce

Published 2021-11-27
Today we’re explaining why our 2010 Rolls-Royce Ghost, which new in cost $294,000 after options, could have been the ultimate family sedan. Unfortunately, trying to use a used Rolls-Royce Ghost as a daily driver family sedan isn’t quite the perfect experience we were hoping for because of one major downside - people think it’s something it isn’t.

About this video: The Ghost was the company’s play at giving the market a more “affordable” car. It was designed to be the Phantom Owner’s Daily Driver as well as open Rolls-Royce up to more clientele in a lower tax bracket. And it worked brilliantly for them. The Ghost became known as the Rolls-Royce sedan you’d want to drive, rather than be driven around in. However, if you ask me, I’d be happy in either position. But I must not be in the tax bracket they’re referring to.

I believe that a used Rolls-Royce on paper should be a fantastic family sedan, capable of doing just about anything you could reasonably ask a sedan to do. But over the last few months, I’ve seen just now absurd trying to daily drive a used Rolls-Royce can actually be. So let’s talk about what makes this car near perfect but also what causes it to be one of the most hilarious family sedans possible.

To start, let’s talk about the single biggest upshot. You get to drive a car that - new - was worth nearly $300,000 for less than half the price. And it’s not like the daily driver industry has changed too much in the past 10 years. This car has nearly everything you could ask for short of autonomous driving... and bluetooth audio in the 2010 model. But they fixed that in 2011/12 models.

This is my first experience with radar cruise control, and I have to say, I love it. In fact, it’s something that I miss in every single other car we have. Highway driving is so much easier with it, and it feels like that’s where the Ghost belongs.

There’s also the topic of service. Now, most people would naturally assume that owning something like this after 11 years of it being on the road would be financially irresponsible. And frankly, if you buy a bad one out of warranty, it could be.

Another up-side to that, though, is that Rolls-Royce still offers warranties and service plans on some Ghosts. This one, for example, was an 11-year-old Ghost with 25k miles that was sold to us with 2 years of Provenance.

Add to that, the suspension is soft, comfortable, and overall some of the best I’ve ever experienced. This is a car you don’t mind going for a 3 hour drive in. It just feels like a short commute. It’s effortless, easy, and peaceful. It truly reminds me of old 80s & 90s land yachts that were built for eating the miles.

But it’s not all roses and daisies when it comes to trying to daily drive a used Rolls-Royce. So now, let’s talk about why it may not actually be the ultimate daily family sedan.

There’s the big one - depreciation. You see, while that warranty may be unlimited mileage, and while that service plan may last you two years no matter how much you drive, you can’t avoid the inevitable loss of money.

This thing also draws so much attention that it is near undriveable in smaller towns and cities. In Miami, LA, London, or Manhattan where people have REAL money, this car is just a Lincoln Town Car. In a smaller city, it tends to stand out... a lot.

And I don’t mean, oh sometimes someone takes a photo. No, that’s what happens in the Aston. Occasionally on a drive, someone smiles and takes a photo of the CAR. But that’s rare, and usually it’s just a car guy who thinks its neat to see one or wants to post it to VinWiki.

And so with that, while I would love to say the Ghost is the PERFECT, ULTIMATE, DREAM daily driver... it just isn’t it. A daily shouldn’t stress you out. It shouldn’t draw that much uncomfortable attention.

So if you’re looking for the constant attention, don’t mind talking to strangers, and don’t mind people asking you how much money you make ALL THE TIME, and want to stick out every where you go, it’s great!

However, if you’re wanting the perfect family sedan for $120k... it seems the S-Class is still the way to go sadly.

  • Haters will be haters. Ive been daily driving a 2016 Series II for 3 years now. Love it!
  • Definitely sold me on my dream of daily driving a Rolls. The cons are a literal non issue for me lol. I stick out like a sore thumb already so attention never bothered me.
  • @DilanJay
I drive a 2023 RR Ghost everyday and I love it
  • We also love our 2010 Ghost. We happily added an extended warranty for peace of mind. We select where we choose to take it, because we fear bad parking choices.
  • @PhillsFashion
This video was so informative and perfect for all the questions I had thanks
  • @QJHKI
I watched the whole video! Informative and actually entertaining. I was looking for ghost's ownership videos, but yours is the closest I could find. Thanks for the video man.
  • @youtoobe169
Lots of good info here! I drove a '21 G63 for a year and it did get a fair amount of attention, but nothing too scary. As for the technician, I would have reported him to the manager and gotten him fired.
  • @dungkine
So helpful in my decision to own one ;) thanks ! Great car and great configuration by the way !
  • There is nothing discreet on this car, and it will draws lot of attention to who drives it, as you mentioned...the worst is the jealous people...
  • @TheVermontrules
Being mean because someone is jealous is one thing, being followed home and robbed or killed is another. Like you said, when you draw this kind of attention to yourself, people imagine things. Thank you for this video, your point is well taken.
  • @AlahjeLLC
I’ve been feeling hesitant about driving my cullinan to work, I teach 6th grade writing…but it’s my only car lol
  • @EOK47
Very informative video! Thanks for making and sharing it about the RR. So with that being said, are you going to sell car?
  • @pamelametani
beautiful! I just bought my first rolls (and just uploaded the video). they're amazing cars! hope you're enjoying yours!
  • @PhillsFashion
Please more videos I love this car absolutely beautiful
  • I could not agree with every point you made in this entire video! I bought a 2012 Ghost and have put about 8k miles a year for the past two years. Got it with 24k miles and it has been an awesome daily driver. The main "down" side to daily drive it is definitely the attention it gets. I have two Ferrari's, a Porsche, Maserati and an i7 BMW and NONE of them get the attention that the Rolls gets! I can't get gas without somebody asking me for a job or asking me how much I make and how much the car cost. Crazy to think I have never been asked that in either Ferrari. Great review and spot on!!
  • @grgygantz6760
The comments that you made at the end of your video. First I have to say I find them very amusing and second and foremost I seem to get those comments now. But I’m really riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle. Some of the women that come up are very annoying. From the standpoint of can you pay my cell phone bill can you pay my water bill send me gift cards sound like leave. I would love to own a ghost and hopefully someday a previously owned one. There can’t be anything more exhilarating than taking the lady out for a cruse. I love it when they asked me what do you do for a living I’m retired don’t you know that men in my age bracket don’t have any money and they shake their head and look at me and go I bet he’s lying. I loved your review keep up the good work
  • @gregorynp
Picking up a 2013 Certified next week. Loved this video. So much better than those ones that show the same features over and over again. Great comments about actual ownership.
