Repair DAMAGED Hydraulic Cylinder for CAT 16H Motor Grader | Machining & Welding

Published 2021-04-23
This video is a job we did to repair a damaged hydraulic cylinder for a Caterpillar 16H Motor Grader articulating cylinder. The piston, bolt and nut are stuck inside the cylinder barrel and caused a bit of damage to the cylinder barrel and rod, so we need to replace the barrel and repair the threads on the rod. First we cut off the oil port on the cylinder barrel, then set up in our lathe and machine off the weld to remove the barrel end. We then make the new barrel which includes drilling the oil port, machining for weld prep, cutting an internal thread and welding the oil port and end cap on to the barrel. We finish off the repair by hand tapping the internal thread on the cylinder rod.

In this video we are using:
- BM-63VE Milling machine
- TM-26120G Centre Lathe
- WIA 500i Weldmatic welder

The simplicity of how to find the center of that tube is so humiliating well done!

Great build bro. The bludgeon the cylinder was a wow.. you seem to see in your mind the whole plan and that’s is the way.. I enjoy the humor out takes at the end and the do gie.. ha we raise dogs that are service dogs.. we keep them for one years and teach much and then we give them back and the dogs go to college to learn more important tasks.. In the end a very needy person receives the dog for free to help them live their life.. The foundation is called dogs for better lives.. based in southern Oregon.. Your dog seems well trained and is a sweet boy.. ☺️👍

I really like the fact that you show us on the equipment where the part originated from.

This is an industry a world apart from me and our paths will likely never cross, but there is something strangely satisfying about watching these video’s. It’s like watching an artist paint something you have never seen before.
  • Friday? Check. Maccas? Check. Kids in bed? Check. Time to relax with my favorite Machinist.

I've learned so many Aussie terms and vernacular listening to you and reading the comments. It's like a whole other language...
  • Don know what it is, but your videos are therapeutic to me. Just watching someone turn junk into serviceable and within spec pieces is relaxing to me.

    "3/4 of a banana" - you're killing my sides!

Thread cutting on a lathe still seems like a dark art to me. I'm astonished how easy you make everything look.

The thing I like most about your channel is you explain what's needed then get to the machining. Other channels go into such excruciating detail about how they go about setting up a job, clamping it down, dialing it in, why this will work & why that won't, etc. Which is fine if that's what the viewer is into, however, I'm not a machinist and never will be but I'm always curious as to how a technical machining job is accomplished, which you do to perfection. Thanks!

Here I am sitting in upcountry Thailand having a icy cold beer thinking how much I miss this shit and also how much I don't. Retirement is what it is.
