This narrative of 'Trent can't defend at RB' is over the top, just because he is playing for Liverpool! I'm not saying Trent is good at defending, but he is decent at it. He played that position and helped Liverpool to win all possible club trophies mind you! Trent pocketed Leroy Sane in that champions league match in 2018 for all who chose to ignore or forgotten one of his best defensive games

No one else has the passing like Trent in the team to split through the lines
  • It’s not about defending, it’s about receiving the ball in tight spaces, with your back to goal, while pressed. He struggled there against Serbia, and would get exposed in the same way. This falls into the ‘on the ball’ skill category that we say he excels at. He excels when played at RB and drifts in so nobody can be designated as his opposite man.

"Passing range" is not enough to be a good midfielder. You need to be technically brilliant and have a high footballing IQ. Gerrard and Lampard had amazing passing range but they couldn't shine in midfield together because they didn't know how to control a game like Xavi/Kroos/Modric. England would be better to put a player like Wharton or Mainoo beside Rice because they'll offer more control. For some reason England never value these type of players

Only the people who don’t watch Liverpool don’t believe that Trent can be in midfield

Trent losing a midfield runner is a big worry against a better team especially

Spot on about Kyle Walker! Great 1v1 but his overall defensive games could improve a lot

I wouldn't say we'd get ripped to shreds with him in midfield, but I i wouldn't start him today if that's ok. Think he can come for 20 mins though for sure.

Have you seen his free kicks and outside the box shots. Lets not forget those
  • There is only 1 player who deserves a fair chance to play all euro games and that's Trend Elexandra Arnold. You'll see flames in no time .

All I can say he is an accident waiting to happen and I have to agree his range of passing was quite breathtaking cause they was mainly all out of the range of his teammates taking my breath away in shock

Hopefully we’ll see a better fit with the midfielders in the next game
  • You don't HAVE to find a space for Alexander Arnold, or anyone else. Earn your place in the England team, or don't play. Southgate has two decent right-backs, it's his job to be strong enough to bench one, not to squeeze one in elsewhere.
  • What Southgate does have is options in midfield and attack. Most other managers there would love to have the squad Southgate has available. The $64K question is picking a balanced 11
  • Who’s here after the first 2 games and where Trent was hauled off just after half time he isn’t good enough off the ball to warrant a midfield or even a defensive position how he hasn’t been moved to right mid position baffles me
  • @Ruscococo1
International football is more technical its not the prem where you rely on physicality and winning the ball back.

And in another instalment of ex player bias towards their old club…
