Here I demonstrate my 3 favorite styles of basal anchors used for SRT (single rope technique climbing) and explain the pros and cons for each. This is obviously NOT an exhaustive list... What do you like to use and why? Let me know in thecomments!

As always, excellent explanations! I'm sort of new to your channel and now you're one of my favorites! I'm a 49 year old climber from Connecticut and was mostly old school, mainly, I had nobody to teach me SRT, climbing gear etc... I broke down a couple of years ago and now I'm climbing SRT, bought and use rigging rings, and all sorts of climbing gear. A new spark was ignited in me for this industry and I haven't looked back! I look forward to the daily challenges and different ways to climb and work in trees. This is an amazing life we get to have, loving our jobs no matter how awful some days can be lol! Thanks for all the time you out into your vids! I appreciate you!

Ive been using the same Singing Tree Quickie that I use for canopy anchors on a butterfly knot. But im glad to have seen this as I will now add that extra butterfly just above the anchor.

Option #4: stack up every mattress and couch cushion under the tree and hope for the best.
  • @matskempe72
Awesome! I go for the third option. It will save you time in case of that emergency.

Thanks for taking the time to xplan your techniques,, 👍👍
  • ive always ran a runing bowlin with a figure 8 backup lnot but this makes me want to rethink that
  • @TheToolnut
I usually use a minimalist set up for B.A, running bowline with a Yosemite finish. Putting a fisherman's knot in the tail is a great idea, 👍😁🌲🇮🇪

Just a couple of observations... Your second example fails the whistle test. At any point in a rescue you MUST be able to let go of the rope without the climber falling to the ground. In the 3rd example with the TAZ you should tie a stopper knot immediately below the TAZ so there is no way the rope can pass thru the TAZ without untying the knot.
  • Quick question can you cross load a mallion for srt, alpine butterfly anchor, I am afraid if I use rope on rope that would be to much friction and the rope could snap. Cheers

Would there not be any reason to connect to the butterfly on the second basal anchor and attach to your personal belay device to lower the individual in a very controlled manner? You could even pre weight it with your body weight and remove some line tension to disconnect the original carabiner away from the ring? Just thinking out loud!
  • As someone who also does rock climbing, petzl makes a grigri and on option 3 looks like you could also use a grigri.

Rescue with the wrap on the tree: you’d have to be careful in the rush to make sure the wrap you put at the base isn’t canceled out by an opposite wrap on the climbing line?
  • @trimbaker1893
NIcely done. I set an alpine butterfly like that and I leave a rigging line beside the tree so a rescuer doesnt have to find gear, just tie in and lower me.
  • @robthompson1399
    I like option 2, I'd like 3, but I don't own a rig. Just curious, what's wrong with a bowline ?
  • @MegaCbgames
Easy and cheap option for a rig to lower option is an tyed of halfhitch.
  • @bman6065
I use a running bowline for everything almost. Evidently that's not officially kosher? I'm curious as to why
