The inaugural McDonald's All-American high school team is a fun one. While it only features one all-time NBA star, several forgotten players carved out a spot in college or the NBA. That said, this is one of the weakest rosters largely because of how recruiting worked back in the 70s when getting game tape was much more difficult. Here's a look back at every player who made the roster in 1977. #nba #nbahistory #highschoolbasketball #ncaabasketball #magicjohnson

Albert King was not a no-name out of high school, he was probably the most well known high school player at the time. McKoy got passed by King, Banks, Magic, and wasnt considered for the pros.

Gene Banks dunked over Ralph Samson should be a highlight reel.
  • You got to watch Sonny Vaccaro the Sole Man. Sonny who asked to help Youngstown State coach to recruit. He started the Dapper Dan Classic. Which is why the McDonald’s AllStar game is popular.

Wayne McCoy Albert King and Jeff Ruland are from New York and i don’t think they actually had a game that year for some reason.

My father was a business associate of Pete Budko in the 90's. I meant him at a business function once. Nice guy and was still built like an athlete even more than a decade from his playing days. Was telling me about how he went golfing with Dean Smith after his UNC days and how Jordan showed up once to play a round.

Super video but some of your info isn't correct. This was the first year I really started following basketball. I was in junior high at the time. Wayne McCoy early in high school was supposed to be the next Kareem. Mainly because he was like 6'9 as a soph and dominated. But his last two years wasn't special plus he didn't grow. So he fell out of the top five. Albert in high was thought to be more talented than Bernard. Him and Gene Banks were considered the best with Magic close behind. At that time players could play in as many all star games as they wanted and Gene Banks usually got the MVP. He had like four or five MVPs going against other All Americans. If you don't have it, try to find Street & Smith for this year. There's a huge article on Albert and Gene. I still have it.

Gene Banks had nothing to do with Coach K. Nothing. Recruited and signed by Bill Foster 4 years before Coach K was hired.

If i were a quality basketball player I'd play my whole career over seas exploring the world. Not as prestigious as the NBA but the things you would experience.

kicked out of the league for marijuana use? Oh how things change. Stephon Marbury and KG were always stoned lol

Also it was the AAU games where reality ran into preseason hype. Namely Magic was better than King, Banks and McCoy. And Tripuka was way better than people realized.
