5 Signs You're Not An ESFP

Published 2021-07-15
The ESFP personality type - not everybody identifies with this type code, but many people who consistently receive ENFP, INFP and INFJ type results from online tests may in fact be cognitive ESFPs.

This video discards the misleading E-S-F-P dichotomies, and focuses instead on the cognitive functions in order to give you 5 clear signs you're not an ESFP.

About me:
Hi, I'm Harry, and I'm intensely passionate about personality typing and self-development - so much so that I have created my own Jung-inspired system, taking a more high-resolution look at the factors making up personality.

Through Cognitive Personality Theory I examine the underlying mechanisms behind cognition, and the means through which a single type can have limitless individual variation - I believe type itself is just a set of cognitive predispositions that can according to the needs of the situation be overcome.

I don't believe any type is limited in what they can achieve, but have noticed sensationalist attitudes and internet trends propagating a culture in which type-development is actively discouraged in favour of conforming to simplistic archetypes. Through CPT I hope to dispel various myths and oversimplifications of what constitutes personality type, and along the way encourage a healthier attitude towards type that allows a person to become not who they are told they are, but rather who they want to be.

I really like that you're getting more into the sensing types

My stepfather scored as ESFP, and he has ADHD. He's usually hyperfixating on something or seeking some form of stimuli. But socially he's actually rather shy. He can be quite uncomfortable in social situations he's new to, but he can adapt if there's some sort of activity he enjoys. Cooking and eating, for example. Music as well- he's a self-taught musician. Learned by ear, doesn't know how to read music, and I'm sure he has perfect pitch. Genuinely one of the best people I know. He's treated me so much better than either of my parents have. Being an INTP I get overwhelmed by how active and loud he can be sometimes, but I appreciate his nature nevertheless. The world would be so boring without people like him.
  • My Se dom way of describing Se dom- I’m always scanning, and this is happening very quickly. I don’t see everything at once. But I see things very quickly and love to react to it right then and there (Se-Te combo!). I really liked how you described Sign 2. Very spot on.

Thank you for this detailed and more comprehensive definition of the ESFP. I struggled with finding my type as I related more with definitions of the "intuitive" types, since I pick up information fairly quickly and rather unconsciously. I was mistyped as *NFP before finally settling on ESFP. The ESFP stereotypes of the party animal didn't resonate - though I do enjoy a good party from time to time! - but I find this more nuanced definition provided by you, Joyce Meng, and others to really shed light on my cognitive processes. Indeed, a "sensing" type can be more "intuitive" in many respects than is typically given them credit! Thank you!!

ESFPs are one of my favorite types out of the 16 others! It's nice to see a sensor video on this channel!
  • @leon773
Pls make a "5 signs you´re not" video for the ENTJ

Yessssssssssssss! I was already mostly certain of my type, but I’ve been “certain” a few times with INTP and ESTP, so this confirms it! My favorite parts were about how Ni-Fi sneaks up on ESFPs with revelations they don’t necessarily see the source of, which is astonishingly accurate, along with how the ESFP thought process (referring to using Ti) is often experienced as a hum. Everything was accurate, but those little details really got me. I also liked how you addressed the ESFP stereotypes. I thought I was an introvert for years and get overwhelmed in busy places, so that among other things made it quite a journey typing myself. Do you have ESFP friends you got data from or is this a result of your internal framework for CPT? Insightful and accurate! Thank you :D
  • @Lena-mv2lq
I'm an ESFP who mistyped as ISTP for the first couple of years of being into mbti. Really good video!
  • @skylerseibert
I’ve been silently watching your channel for almost a year now. The comprehensive and unique perspectives you offer are truly intriguing. Hope you’re doing well.
  • I love how Ni sneaks in and helps Fi fill the void. It's like the Ni vision chooses me and I lock onto it, even getting somewhat obsessive over the concept, while some of the Se aspects of it might change over time. However when applying Se- Te in the moment to something I'm passionate about, it can make things super perfectionistic on occasion because the Ni in the background pictured it a certain way. This can apply even to short term things such as cooking if I lock onto it enough. Leaving a mess strewn around, but focusing on the main thing which is the food itself, steamrolling through to the end result. Without the Fi- Ni I can become very directionless, and resort to a divergent state scrolling the internet waiting for something to pop out at me to strike my interest. I noticed Ni dialogue can often manifest in thinking of all the things I could say next to someone, in a one-to-one manner which corrolates with something I'm trying to get across/express, or something I'm trying to work towards.

I've always felt like an ESFP but seeing myself thinking deeply about who I am and what I want to become and I've never been the typical loud and funny ESFP made me question my type. But now I realized the fact that I think about myself and my beliefs makes me an ESFP. I'm happy lol
  • This video is soooo me it doesn't even make sense! I think I truly am ESFP (you should do ESTP next just so I can be sure) I've switched around from so many ExFx and even xNTP because I just thought party animal didn't really fit me. "I can quickly understand how things work! I can be manipulative (rarely tho) and adapt to the social atmosphere, and generally always follow what feels authentic to me! (I've gotten many compliments on people seeing my intense passion for certain things and my overall "honest" ways, even though they're practically second nature for me!) Nope, the way you've explained here makes it so much less doubt-able for me! I DO admire sophisticated things! It's a "these details, it's function, this is quite cool to simply admire" thing! And intense focus on external things? Don't get me started! Learning to solve a Rubix cube, building the components of a desktop from scarp parts (I don't really like coding tho, not very stimulating), playing Need For Speed, gardening, storm-tracking and of course nature photography, all these things are external things I focused intensely on for months and even years as I grew in teen years! The logic thing is also very true, while my logic can be quite extensive in things I understand well, MANY times I simply use tutorials and search "best ways to do XYZ" or "best XYZ." My logic is indeed also driven by Fi, many times unconsciously. It is at times inconsistent, and I am called out by ENTJ I know for inconsistent logic during debates as well as many others in general for "small things that don't add up logically" (I can barely explain how I got there myself). 😂 Everyone around me says my type couldn't be more obvious despite my doubt, but now I see they're correct, just not for the stereotypical reasons! Thank you so much good sir!! 🙏🏾

Ok, cool. I finally understand what it is to have a “Ti blind spot” (Which I also have, as an ENFP). I failed Algebra twice because although I often knew the correct answers to the problems I could not “show my work”. I really did not know what this Ti blind spot was and I thought it was something to be more scared of or concerned by. Like I shouldn’t ever trust my own logic. Now I see it’s a lack of tracing my logic back and articulating those steps. What a relief! I’ve never been able to do that and have made peace with it. Thanks Harry.
  • @rob_cpt
My favorite of this series so far! Related a lot with the self realization and the sense of wonder. The way you described Ti blind spot into a strength of open mindedness was an illuminating way to look at that function.
  • @Oilofmercy
So grateful for this. I've mistyped myself!
  • @sad_doggo2504
I think you nailed the thinking part at the end there. From an ESFP friend: "I guess I feel like I'm thinking loudest (and therefore more clearly) when I'm talking."
  • @ec8335
I'm so glad to see a new video from you. Very insightful as usual, and I really enjoyed it. I've got several thoughts about it that I might want to comment here later, but I'm in the middle of working on something so I just want to say this right now: thanks so much for pointing out that ESFP is an underrated and highly misunderstood type. I know some ESFPs (including my brother) who are much more complex and intelligent than this type is usually stereotyped to be.
  • @arlettasloan6453
I feel like, now, having done ever so much research and talked to so many people, that this video has finally become very enjoyable to me. Thank you for all your help and insight.
