Top 10 Poorest Counties in the US. (Poverty=Cheap Real Estate)
Do you know what the Poorest counties are in the United States? I have gotten a lot of requests about county videos. I talk about states, cities, and towns, but never counties. So, here we are. This video is just the counties with the highest median household income according to the latest American Community Survey from the U.S. Census Bureau as of June 2022.
Right now in 2022, the nation's median household income is right about $65,000. The median household income in the counties on this list is about half that.
When you get numbers like that you know a percentage of that county is hunting squirrel for dinner 3 nights a week.
So, today's video is a county you should move to if you are barely making it by and you enjoy a squirrel
Get it?
Got it?
Good.
Let’s take a look.

It’s easy to be a poor county when there’s 12 people living there. Do a top ten poorest counties with >100,000 residents. That would be interesting. Clickety click click….right?

Maybe its my red kneck showing but some of those houses in Kentucky look pretty good. After living in the DC area in clusters and apartments and the only affordable homes are in the Blue ridge, that style of living looks good. In major cities, a six figure income gets you an efficiency apartment.
  • I love the county videos. It’s the perfect scale of analysis for the statistics you are showing. Keep doing county videos!
  • @RuthSmith1
I love your videos! Very informative and well put together!

I believed you at first when you said the rest of the list was Mississippi 😂
  • @wordawakeningny
Four states that I'm sure will be on here: Mississippi, West Virginia, Arkansas and Kentucky.
  • What some may consider poverty, could be blissfully happy and peaceful for these folks. Living in a high dollar house, making high dollar payments, and so strapped you can't put a picture on your wall, is not happiness. A lot of these folks have e everything paid for, eat well, and do not do without. You don't need a 7 dollar cup of coffee to feel wealthy.

I love squirrel and dumplings. Been eating eating it since I was 8. I’m 37 and retired now. Squirrel season just opened up and my 9 year old is already bugging me to get in the woods. I was never poor. I just rather not by my meat at a store.

Mississippi has the highest poverty rate of any state in the nation. Going into this list I was expecting to see Mississippi, New Mexico, Louisiana, Arkansas and West Virginia. I am surprised not to see Louisiana and Arkansas on this list. I was surprised to see South Dakota in this list let alone twice. I also wasn’t expecting to see Kentucky on this list more than once.

    1. Buffalo County, South Dakota 2. Owsley County, Kentucky 3. McDowell County, West Virginia 4. Clay County Kentucky 5. Catron County, New Mexico 6. Taliaferro County, Georgia 7. Corson County, South Dakota 8. Holmes County, Mississippi 9. Coahoma County, Mississippi 10. Bell County, Kentucky
  • Hi Briggs. Got to get up early in the morning but I couldn't resist this one. Have a great weekend.
  • I was expecting either Mississippi, Arkansas or West Virginia to have the most. I wasn’t expecting it to be Kentucky.

Briggs has finally done a video on places I could afford to live!

3:07 - The trailer homes with the $50k GMC truck & $40k Infinity, not exactly crying destitute. 🤣
  • Mr. Briggs, As always I love your work as I have told you a number of times and this video is another one in just a stellar compendium. I have an idea for you. How about a video about the 10 least educated counties in the US. I have an inkling that this will correlate to a number of ideas you have presented.

Hi Briggs! 😀 I am very sorry. I lost my phone for a while and lost the data so I lost track of your channel for a few weeks! Great to be back and listening to your great chats here again! 😀

"poverty = cheap real estate" is ridiculous and pretty insensitive to the housing issues in the US right now. first, we dont need to be tipping off rich people on places to go buy more real estate so they can rent it back to poorer people for even more. secondly, the solution for not having proper housing in the first place shouldn't be to have people moving to poor counties. like wtf.
  • @MrPriebster
Never thought I would hear Chamberlain SD mentioned on here! Also kinda surprised more South Dakota counties like Todd co did not make the list.
  • @whooooaa1
I was born in WV and still have family there and in KY. The list is correct, but from my experience McDowell County, WV was the most desolate place I have ever seen. You can see what used to be back when this county was booming from the coal industry to where it is now with all the abandoned buildings. It looks post apocalyptic and is very unfortunate. Take the drive from Bluefield, WV up to Welch, WV and you will see first hand.
