For parents who want to be intentional about how their children are formed, homeschooling is often attractive, yet for many families it can seem like an impractical pipe dream. Today I sit down with Sarah Mackenzie, founder and host of Read-Aloud Revival, to discuss all things homeschooling. We discuss many of the common hesitations people have to homeschooling, the familial benefits of a shared learning environment, the importance of intergenerational education, how to homeschool if both parents have to work, many resources for homeschooling, and much more.

While still dating, my now husband asked me if I was willing to homeschool future children, all the way through high school. He knew it was a priority for his children. And I agreed!

Thank you SO much for having Sarah Mackenzie on. I LOVE your podcast, but as a Catholic mom of 6 who homeschools, some of your guest have been the kind of guests whose advice give moms crippling panic and anxiety attacks seeking to control every aspect of life. Sarah Mackenzie is SO life-giving. She is amazing!!!
  • Please Lord give me the Grace of homeschooling, show my son’s Father is the best choice .

I've homeschooled my 2 older kids for 4 years. I also run a legal business and have 2 toddlers. We put the older two in a crossfit camp this month. Running to drop them off and pick them off is crazy!! I couldn't imagine having kids in different schools and different programs and worrying about homework, teachers, waking early and packing lunches, etc 😅 people say we're nuts for homeschooling but honestly it's a lot calmer of a life than the alternative.
  • Gods little wink to me as I’m in the thick of discerning homeschooling my first born 😂 thank you for this!! What a beautiful and grace filled witness she is!

I am 39 years old, and I was homeschooled from Kindergarten through Highschool. I believe I got an excellent education. My school day started at 8:30 and ended at 3:30. My mother had a very structured schedule for us. I preferred it and performed best this way. Our grading scale was similar to the local school district. However, I needed a 94% or better to earn an "A." My curriculum was heavy on classic literature. I also played sports with the homeschool coop and the Christian school in my town. I was able to go to college, get my bachelor's degree, and find a good job.

I love Sarah Mackenzie. I’m pregnant with my 5th (Catholic mama here), and I was fearful about homeschooling with another new baby, but when she speaks about homeschooling with twins it was so comforting and realizing that I can do it by the grace of God. I have let go of the fear, and I am embracing this season ❤️
  • Love Sara Mackenzie! I am a long time homeschooler, 20 years, and I just want to encourage of the young moms out there to give it a try! You don't have to be an expert, you just have to be invested in helping your kids grow.

Current homeschool mom and a Doctor of Education who spent over 20 years teaching grades K-3! It shouldn't surprise many that those of us who can are leaving the system to teach our own! I'm currently watching the reading wars play out from a far, research being misinterpreted in regards to literacy, and from a personal stance, I can attest that our most gifted students are not being served well in the "classroom box"! We do an eclectic format in our home mixing unschooling, classical elements, along with core classes. My son who was once diagnosed as dyslexic and humiliated in front of his peers is now in line through his achievement to apply to top schools for college. I share reading strategies on my YouTube for families who want to homeschool their kids, helping them to understand the developmental reading spectrum ( no, kids do not all need to learn at age 5 how to read) and sharing with the community how our current school system is creating functional illiteracy in the next generation by ignoring critical research!

Homeschooled our three for most of their education. We didn’t follow the public school model. We didn’t work as many hours on busy work. Had more time every day for family and peace. We took off before Christmas through New Year’s instead of summer break. We went on lots of field trips. All three are college graduates.
  • Sarah helped me to go from despair in my homeschooling to thriving! I highly recommend her podcast ❤
  • @carlac33
Oh I am so glad you interviewed her. In my mind, she will be the patron saint of homeschooling in a century. She just brings so much encouragement and joy to mothers, and I love her reading lists!
  • Aw, I just started watching and my 3 year old got so excited and said, “That’s Tomie dePaola’s friend!”
  • @racheln4309
I just finished my first year of homeschooling and it was amazing! Hard days, yes, but most of all it was so so worth it! You just learn as you go. It teaches patience and I LOVE that my little kids get to have a real relationship with my “school aged” kids instead of being without them all day.
  • i love all these homeschooling interviews in fact ive noticed that the children turn out ridiculously SMART more than public schooled kids

I've homeschooled my kids for 10 years now. I recently joined RAR Premium and it has been unbelievably helpful! Sarah is such an amazing coach.
  • I’m a mom of 4, including a 2 year old and 4 month old. My husband has given me the blessing to homeschool our 7 and almost 5 year old this next school year. But I remember telling a close friend just last night that the one concern/fear I have is that I know I will feel exhausted by bedtime after trying to manage our household and our girls’ activities and learning every day. So, I’m definitely going to listen to this! I know I need the encouragement!
  • @Not_a_witch
I told my husband when we were dating that I was going to be homeschooling when I had children. It was a requirement for me when looking for a husband
  • I needed to hear this. I've been homeschooling for 4 years and feel like i am constantly failing. But I've felt on my heart God telling me not to worry about all the books I'm teaching on. There's all this pressure I put on myself when it was never meant to be that way. I'm encouraged to continue this homeschooling journey with my kids. ❤
  • That comment about a peaceful and joyful mom was extremely impactful for me. Thank you for that
