For a long time, the hill of Montmartre has been a place of worship: supposed Gallic paganism then Gallo-Roman temples dedicated to Mercury and probably to Mars; Christian worship after the martyrdom of the bishop Saint Denis in the 3rd century, chapel surmounting the crypt of the martyrium of Saint Denis, construction in the 12th century of the Saint-Pierre church, among the oldest in Paris, for the royal abbey of Montmartre by King Louis VI and his wife Adelaide of Savoy. The name of the hill of Montmartre comes according to some from the name of the place, Mons Martis (Mount of Mars) or according to others from Mons Martyrum (Mount of the Martyrs). The church of Montmartre, which replaced the Roman temples, was built in honor of the holy martyrs Saint Denis, Rustique and Éleuthère who were beheaded according to legend4 on the hill and including a chapel, located on the southern side of the mound, was to commemorate the traditional place of torture, taking the name of Saint-Martyr.

The Mount of Mars could therefore be reinterpreted around the 9th century as Mount of Martyrs (Mons Martyrum), then by popular derivation into “mont de martre”, martre meaning “martyr” in old French5. The toponymic substitution of the pagan mountain by the Christian mountain, however, remains hypothetical and the double etymology (Mount of Mars and Mount of Martyrs) is still traditionally proposed. It would be necessary, “to be able to resolve the question, to know what the people, in their spoken language, called this hill before the 9th century, since it was at this time that written documents recorded the change of name”6.
