The fact that you cannot tell whether the songs are new or not tells you how timeless that Scarface music is.
-
Bruv, you've done your father a great service by introducing him to hip-hop. Thank you.
-
I was in high school when 'The Diary' dropped. We were studying Edgar Allen Poe. As an assignment, we had to write dark poetry. I wrote the lyrics to 'Never Seen A Man Cry'. I got a 💯.😂 Thanks Face!
-
This is a good showcase of why Scarface is in a lot of rappers top 5. His cadence and storytelling is second to none.
-
I love how transparent Dad is with his emotions.

Scarface was legit certified 51/50 as a teenager. Tried to kill himself because he didn't like how he looked and was thrown in an insane asylum. His first album solo album "Mr Scarface is Back" is a masterpiece where he basically focuses all that manic depression into gangster stories. Mike Dean started out as a session musician for Rap A Lot records as well as an engineer/mixer. 94 is when he started to fully establish himself as a producer most notably on Scarface's The Diary.
-
"Never Seen a Man Cry", was the biggest rap song here on Kenya when in came out, people played it everywhere, no one had ever heard rap like that. Scarface has complex rhymes.
-
This is beautiful. Just a young man and his dad sharing their love of music and their experiences with it. Top notch.

Scanning the comments, I haven’t seen it mentioned, but this session is made even more special (and feels so fortunate) when we realize that Scarface dealt with serious health issues in recent years. So thankful we still have him! Also if you’re new to Smile and Mary Jane, the videos for those songs capture their vibes perfectly. Definitely worth watching.
-
Facemob is one of Scarface's nicknames. MC Eiht as in "8" is a west coast legend. Straight Up Menace is the theme song from the movie Menace II Society. It's a classic and goes perfectly with the movie.
-
Scarface tiny desk show made the hairs on my arms stand up and gave me chills He's the G.O.A.T.
-
This Tiny Desk was epic! Great to see Face get his flowers, even more beautiful that he’s still with us. Can’t help but think that performing the classics are healing.
-
Mike Dean started his career working with Scarface, doing co production and keys. Their music relationship goes back to 93 I believe. Scarface is also a producer as well, that's why they have such good chemistry. Side note: Scarface was 2Pac's favorite rapper, and his cadence was heavily influenced by Scarface, that's where the similarities come from.
-
Loved that you guys covered this, that Tiny Desk concert rocked and was totally unexpected. The Geto boys are so criminally underrated.. they were rapping about mental health issues some 30 odd years ago when it was seen as a taboo subject in the black community.
-
You and your Dad are curating a spirit of culture, father/son bonding and just being plain DOPE. Good job to the two of you!!
-
These are old school classics . I grew up in Houston, and yah Scarface is every rapper’s favorite rapper. Great lyrics , word play and story telling ..Way ahead of his time and can still do it.Glad he made it past his health scare . Can’t wait for you to cover more H-town legends . I see that DJ Screw poster in the background ❤
-
H-town in the house! Thanks for the love guys! We are so proud of them here in Houston
-
I'm happy you two actually paid attention to Scarface's words. He has always been the King of the South in my opinion. I'm from Houston, but I'm not biased. That man is a lyrical genius. 💯
-
Scarface, Slick Rick & Pac best storytellers of all time.
-
This just shows how beautiful hip hop is, a father and son from different generations coming together and experiencing classics together. Larry June has a great Tiny Desk performance too, you all should do a reaction to that.
