Fractal161 just became the second person to ever beat NES Tetris by reaching the True Killscreen in a new record time. How did he do it, and where do things go from here?

Correction: At 5:15, "1/6 of a second" should be "1/3 of a second".

Q: Why is Level 255 Purple instead of Red?
A: When researching my previous video, I found 3 different sources (including 2 TASes) that all showed Level 255 as red. However, it turns out the 2 TASes actually contained slight mods that disabled game crashes. This is understandable since they were made before the game crash triggers were known, so avoiding them would be an annoying process of trial and error. It turns out that on a TAS of a full vanilla cart, there is a very obscure level desync glitch that causes the glitched colors to switch levels. This causes Level 255 gets a purple palette instead of red.

Thanks to everyone new who's subscribed and started following the scene since Blue Scuti got the first True Killscreen! Things are happening CRAZY fast in the scene right now, and the nature of these videos is they take at least 5-7 days to put together. So there's some groundbreaking stuff that's happened just in the past few days that I wasn't able to cover in detail. I'll be getting into as much of it as I can in future videos, but in the meantime - tune into the top NES Tetris player's livestreams, they're doing some incredible stuff with the game right now!

Fractal a true testament to what it means to be a gamer and a part of a community. Congratulations
  • @nixlekk
I was there during the stream. The amount of PURE dedication this guy has was insane. Props to him for still trying even after Scuti got the first crash.
  • @iammichaeldavis
Seeing fractal so happy for scuti the moment he hits the first crash is like, peak humanity

6:41 "Trying a tougher version of what you need to do is kinda the secret of getting better at lots of things, so that you're ready for anything."

I like how Fractal got his own record. He wasn't the first to get the crash, but he was the first to get the earliest crash. Now people can choose to speedrun to beat Fractal, or keep going to beat Scuti

Fractal has always had a heart of gold. He helps my son with all sorts of tech related topics. Always taking time out of his busy schedule to answer with a lot of patience. He is exactly the type of leader you want to see in a community that your child is involved in. Not enough credit goes toward him, he deserves so much more. Thank you, Fractal, for being such a great mentor and role model.

2nd is amazing! I think the main reason Scuti got such big news coverage had a lot to do with his young age. Being the first is one thing, but being the first at something at the age of 13, AND 30+ years since anyone made the record was what really made the story shine - and the media ate that up. If Fractal or anyone over 18 had been the first to crash Tetris I wonder if it would still make mainstream news.
  • @Xoilen
The fact that a 35 year old game has so much hype around it right now is absolutely mind blowing.
  • I saw fractal's reaction to Scuti and it's apparent how wholesome this guy is. So proud of him for getting second. The community needs more people like him.
  • @dryfesands1367
What a thoroughly nice guy Fractal appears to be. A sportsman in the old fashioned sense of the word. Obviously hugely skilled and dedicated but with a grasp on his ego which means he still knows the way you conduct yourself is more important than if you win. The world needs more like him
  • @4RILDIGITAL
Incredible passion and dedication, fractal! The world of Tetris and gaming itself is moved forward by such monumental achievements. It's so inspiring to see the lengths you've reached in this profession we all love. Not being the first to achieve a feat doesn't make the accomplishment any less immense.
  • @KeyT3ch
This is the most wholesome esports/speed running community ever and may it stay that way forever!
  • @ExtraArk
The way Scout speaks of Fractal just makes him seem like future if not current ambassador. I would nominate him for like a Jonas award for helping push the community forward, but also even hosting his own event. Those can be very costly.
  • @BlueEngland
I always feel so proud when I see Scuti get that crash. It's so infectious.
  • @lollllolll.
I just love how wholesome and kind the Tetris community is. Just a community of awesome people having fun and helping eachother
  • @dougnulton
Fractal seems so wholesome and down to earth, an awesome representative for the scene. I didn’t know of this world until your bluescuti video, but now I love following the aftermath!
  • fractal walked so blue scuti could run. This has been such a wholesome time in gaming and im glad that the tetris community is thriving rn.
  • @Saint_Wolf_
The humility on this community is astonishing, just the level of csmaradery and brotherhood between these fellows and their love of their tetros is inspiring. Seeing how Fractal went to BlueScootie's to cheer him on was just like seeing an older brother cheer his younger one up as he's just doing everything perfect.
