Art21 proudly presents an artist segment, featuring Chris Ware, from the "Chicago" episode in the ninth season of the "Art in the Twenty-First Century" series.

"Chicago " premiered in September 2016 on PBS. Watch now on PBS and the PBS Video app: www.pbs.org/video/art-21-chicago/

Chris Ware, known for his New Yorker magazine covers, is hailed as a master of the comic art form. Ware’s complex graphic novels, which tell stories about people in suburban midwestern neighborhoods, poignantly reflect on the role of memory in constructing identity. Stories featuring many of Ware’s protagonists—Quimby the Mouse, Rusty Brown, and Jimmy Corrigan—often first appear in serialized form, in publications such as “The New York Times,” the “Guardian,” or Ware’s own ongoing comic book series “Acme Novelty Library,” before being organized into their own stand-alone books.

An all around unbelievably talented man and also one of the nicest I've had the pleasure to meet. He deserves everything he has and so much more!! Congrats Chris. Your work still makes my heart sing. And your use of colour is second to none.
  • Chris Ware is an absolute master and this is one of the great profiles of his work.
  • I remember Chris Ware when I was in undergraduate school. I remember him selling an extraordinary box art comic piece made of wood, he sold for a mere $1000. I wish I had the means to buy it, it was really a great piece.
  • @gjr72
I just finished Rusty Brown. I enjoyed every single page of it. It was very nice to see those pages when they were just blue pencil, and how they transformed into the actual page. I'm so grateful that we have artist like Chris Ware who provide this nourishment to our souls. Chapeau Maestro!
  • I was gifted Building Stories one christmas and it's the best gift i think I ever received. Completely changed the way I consumed a story. A rare talent and a giant in comics
  • Chris Ware is one of those storytellers I feel like is such a treasure. His artwork is amazing and panel pacing/rhythm seems unparalleled. Stories are poignant and touching. I always recommend his comics to people.

  • @jx3gallery
I see Chris around my town ( Oak Park ) once in awhile. Always friendly, such a Talent!
  • This needs to be viewed by more people. I've known of Ware's work back when he was doing comics in The Chicago Reader. Amazing draftsman and storyteller. I lived in Chicago my entire life, then spent a few years in Oak Park before relocating to Minneapolis 4 years ago. I love the lack of sprawl and congestion in Minneapolis and really embrace that nature is close by, this video made me miss Chicago.

Brilliant, a word that is often used to describe Chris Ware’s stories and art, it’s really worth repeating: brilliant.
