I love that idea of using a messier brush for the further parts to create that background fuzziness and depth of field, then getting crisper lines in the foreground. Simple and effective.

You really capture so much of the spontaneity and looseness of brush strokes that the original had. And just as a heads up many American and international museums have super hi-res images available for download as a part of an open-access program(tied to fair use of public domain work). Perhaps the next time you could use one of those so you could see a close up of the brushstrokes.

I love how loose and informal your brush strokes are. You're so right - the artist kind of shmooshes the details away in the shadow but then your brain fills in what is missing.
