Honestly, number 10 is important for gaming in general. Tilt just ruins your skill, and more importantly, any improvement you can gain from playing.

    # 10 is really important! Overcoming tilt is really difficult for me. Losing a game feels very personal and makes me angry. I really need to work on that.

Playing on tilt is one of the profoundest! Ideas I have heard. Not just for chess but for life. Work, relationships, what else? Put it out to the broader world Nelson. I can't think of anything more satisfying than being able to help millions of people feel happier and probably saving lives.

I've heard of "tilt" in poker, but never knew what it meant. Turns out I've been living life itself on full tilt for the last 45 years. I really need to look into that.

Something similar to 5-5-5 rule that i do is to go to game review and check 3 things i did right, 3 things i could have done differently. Then flip the board and pretend i am the opponent. It gives me time to cool off and also dismantle things

Iโ€™m not the best at chess, but I have been playing 30 minute games and when I warm up I go to 10 minute games, I have went from 400 elo to 600 elo pretty quick. Take your time, slow down, donโ€™t worry about winning every game is another thing, use your games as learning points and gather that knowledge to over all win more.

It is this kind of advice that makes you more useful than some others who encourage one to attempt traps that rarely work. I was especially drawn to your advice about "tilt." I am guilty of that and have lost many a game while playing in that poor mental state. I will follow your advice.

1.not controlling the center 2.not developing pieces- knights and bishops -All 4 3.too many pawn moves - leaves behinds weak squares 4.bringing queen out too early 5.not castling b4 move 10 6.blocking your own pieces from developing 7.not doing proper blunder check - every single time opponent make moves , you should be asking what are they threatening and how I need to respond 8.playing too fast 9.neglecting your kingโ€™s safety 10.playing on tilt - upset angry annoyed - frustrated. Solution -> 5-5-5 rule. Set timer for 5 minutes - 5 jumping jack - get your blood flow . Go to front door - fresh air - 5 deep breath.

FASCINATINGLY to me: this relates to how Bobby Knight explained his Coaching Style: His Style was NOT to tell his players What To DO but rather What NOT to do....

Thanks for the tilt advice i went on a 8 game losing streak when i mouse slipped, should have just walked away. But i also have the opposite issue, where when i play reallly well and make maybe 1 mistake I dont want to ruin my mood.
  • That last one really hit home. For about a week I had felt like my brain was broken because I kept making really dumb mistakes, getting frustrated, playing more aggressively, which led to more dumb mistakes and frustration. Taking a break, even if itโ€™s a whole day, to reset and chill out is really good advice (which is what I did to fix my slump).

The 5-5-5 rule is the best one. The biggest problem is tunnel vision when a person doesn't accept the loss and start to be nervous more and more and more. For some game I don't even try to play again if I find this to me.. Other good thing about 5-5-5, that even Magnus does this.
  • always love your instructional and chess tips videos! Learned so much!

Losing or sensing am about to lose a game builds a frustration in me that I need to learn how to handle, sometimes I play my favorite music to improve mood. Besides tilt, poor internet and sudden network cuts in the African country am in has cost me valuable points.
