That John Lennon joke flew right over her head. That made me bust out laughing. Zappa maintained the exact tone in his voice, told a joke on himself and never missed a beat. John Lennon said, Youre not as ugly as I thought you would be..'. Frank, 'Which leads me to wonder about the strength of his glasses' Now thats a good joke. It seemed like Frank loathed interviews, I think they bored the living shit out of him.

He's just explaining free flow improvisation, which makes soloing a lot easier. It is my specialozation, our concept is very similar to what Frank is talking about.

It's not the musicians or the bands per se, it's record companies and distributors who want a guaranteed return on their investments. Once upon a time they just said "who am I to decide what this is, you're selling out shows so people like it. Lets just put it out there and see what happens." Nowadays it's "we don't think people will like this because the style you're playing doesn't tend to sell too much. We don't care how popular you are in the live area. So we're gonna pass".
