Carrying excess weight around your midsection can be frustrating, especially if you maintain a healthy diet and exercise regularly. Yet, millions of people worldwide struggle with their weight,

It is crucial to understand that belly fat is more than just a layer under your clothes. It is an active endocrine organ that secretes pro-inflammatory cytokines throughout the body, contributing to our risk for chronic diseases.

It's important to recognize that this is not a reflection of personal failure. Our modern-day lifestyles are overloaded with stress, environmental toxins, and convenience foods that actively work against us. In today’s ep, we will explore visceral fat (aka belly fat), the factors that contribute to it, and how to address it using the principles of Functional Medicine effectively.

In this episode, I dive into:
Understanding belly fat and obesity (2:51)
The role of diet and lifestyle in the accumulation of belly fat (10:48)
The impact of sleep, alcohol, and stress on weight gain (19:14)
What are obesogens, and how do they make us gain weight? (21:44)
Health risks associated with visceral fat and belly fat (23:05)
Where does conventional medicine miss the mark? (24:14)
Functional medicine's approach to assessing and addressing visceral fat (26:38)

Here’s my condensed version: -sugar, processed foods, carbs, alcohol are poison -7-8 hours sleep daily -exercise 2.5 hours per week -Lots of green veggies

In 2019 I lost 48 pounds of visceral fat by cutting out all alcohol, all processed food, all added sugars. Prioritized great sleep. Never felt better. I lost some “friends” along the way since I don’t dine out in most restaurants anymore, but so worth it!
  • Where is the guy who summerizes this talk in bullet points? C'mon dude, we need you😅

Sugar is one of the worst foods to eat because it feeds cancer I gave up sugar 15 years ago and eat eggs for my first meal and later only salads and I am 67 now.

WHEW! The equivalent of all your books rolled into one non-stop 36 min video! Amazing how you condensed so much info here and this is a great primer for people who know nothing about functional medicine. I've been a student since Ultramind Solution and appreciate the work you've done WITHIN the system ! kudos and thank you Dr. Hyman!

Since I have given up sugar and bad carbs, I have lost some belly fat, and I feel better physically and mentally! I began doing this three months ago, because I am pre-diabetic. It took that to get me to do something about my eating problems. I mostly dined out at fast food places. No wonder I am pre-diabetic at 55 years old.
  • My God I learn more in one.video than in my 58 years of doctors ..luv u

Omgoodness we need to hear this message about the processed food everyday in the mainstream media, not just to the people interested in health. Thanks for putting this out there
  • But what about those of us who eat NO processed foods, NO sugars, walk 10k steps, sleep 8 hours, eat basically carnivore and STILL have belly fat???
  • @troyvan6952
Big food using the big tobacco playbook..... scary. A great book to read about UPF is Ultra Processed People by Dr. Chris Van Tulleken. After reading this, I can't look at food the same way again. Perhaps you could have him on your show Dr. Hyman. Knowledge is power.
  • Anyone else think his intelligence is extremely attractive? Just me… 😂

Perfect video. I wonder if you wrote a script or go off-the-cuff… amazingly packed, concise, and even with editing, impressive. Thank you!

@27:54 - takeaway is you cannot exercise your way out of visceral fat, you must attack it by changing your diet.
  • At the gym right now working on my belly fat, love you and your channel. I watch you and share your channel at the gym all the time...

I stopped drinking soda fifteen years ago. I haven’t ate baked goods for a year. I haven’t drank alcohol for fifteen years. We don’t eat any processed foods. I have ate steel cut oats for breakfast the past ten years. I eat some eggs more for like a brunch or lunch even. We have cut way way back on carbs as on eating spaghetti only once every other week. We eat organic meats. We don’t ear hardly any fried food except French fries about once per month if that. We only use real butter not margarine. We only use olive oil instead of crisco. We don’t eat snack foods like potato chips. I do eat some Doritos with a little cheese and salsa a few times per week. I sometimes was in a pattern of eating a small pizza once a week but I’m now getting away from that because of all of the dough. We eat brown bread only and it’s a minimum amount of slices per week. For exercise I use a stationary bike at the YMCA during the winter while watching a virtual bike ride on a big screen via YouTube. The videos I concentrate on are set up to be HIIT training. Then I ride three or four times per week on my road bike all spring — Fall. What is my weakness you might ask. I eat a little bit of chocolate. And yes I know, it should be dark chocolate but it’s not.
