Had the pleasure of singing in the Columbus (OH) Symphony Chorus years ago when they did this exquisite piece. Will never forget it.
  • I have loved VW's music for as long as I've discovered it, which is many years ago by now. This was one of the first records I ever bought, not knowing what to expect. It transported me then to a place of beauty and it still does. As a Welsh Brit, it's gratifying to see that this is also appreciated in Germany too. Viele Danke !

What a stunning interpretation of this masterpiece this is. When this huge wave of voices rains over the audience, I get goosebumps on my goosebumps. Absolutely brilliant!

What a beautiful and inspired piece of music, and a lovely rendition as well. I have known and loved Vaughan Williams music for many years, but just stumbled upon this one through a comment on his Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis. Adding this one to my listening repertoire.❤

Serenade to Music English source: William Shakespeare How sweet the moonlight sleeps upon this bank! Here will we sit, and let the sounds of music Creep in our ears: soft stillness and the night Become the touches of sweet harmony. Look, how the floor of heaven Is thick inlaid with patines of bright gold: There's not the smallest orb that thou behold'st But in his motion like an angel sings Still quiring to the young-eyed cherubins; Such harmony is in immortal souls; But, whilst this muddy vesture of decay Doth grossly close it in, we cannot hear it. Come, ho! and wake Diana with a hymn: With sweetest touches pierce your mistress' ear, And draw her home with music. I am never merry when I hear sweet music. The reason is, your spirits are attentive: The man that hath no music in himself, Nor is not mov'd with concord of sweet sounds, Is fit for treasons, stratagems and spoils; The motions of his spirit are dull as night, And his affections dark as Erebus: Let no such man be trusted... Music! hark! It is your music of the house. Methinks it sounds much sweeter than by day. Silence bestows that virtue on it. How many things by season season'd are. To their right praise and true perfection! Peace, ho! the moon sleeps with Endymion, And would not be awak'd. (Soft stillness and the night Become the touches of sweet harmony.)
  • Very nice interpretation of this very english music, as I see it. It doesnt disturb me at all that here we have more than 16 voices, as long as they sing this good. And it is always good with music that has the capacity to celebrate itself.

What a beautiful title of this work "serenade to music", in fact the music is a serenade by itself. What a great composer Ralph Vaughan Williams, this serenade was written as a tribute to conductor Sir Henry Wood, the first time I heard this composer was in Denmark and his famous work for solo violin "the lark ascending" and then in London with his famous " Antarctic Symphony", from that moment I was really in love with his music. Thank you NDR Radiophilharmonie for sharing such beautiful concerts.

Wow. This is a beautiful performance of the choral version of this masterpiece. Many thanks for the upload.
  • @notaire2
  • This is so beautiful. Wonderful performance by the orchestra. The chorus is very good. Thank you.

A quality upload with no cue 'blips'. The sound is excellent and the balance between the choirs and orchestra is almost perfect. Orchestral detail is never lost. Many thanks for this fine posting.
