Using Lightroom with your shared drive doesn't work so the best thing (and faster) is to use iSCSI which uses block level access that is faster and with SSD cache, twice as fast!

Juraj, thank you so much for your help. This video is concise and very easy to follow. Subscribed favourited and will be my go-to tutorial for other friends setting up their synology nas.
  • can i set this up for both my catalog,...let's say,..Drive L and Drive P for the actual photos,...and then see and use them remotely while on a laptop,...not create a taget on a laptop, just access the desktop Iscsi folders remotely?
  • The iscsi keep disconnecting and I no longer remember how to find it again unless i make it a do over from scratch
  • Hi Juraj, I've tried it out with my qnap tvs-872xt (which is a very powerful nas) with an internal m.2 ssd-drive connected to my imac via thunderbolt 3. nevertheless i only get about 100MB/s read and write speed (instead of over 1000 MB/s if i'm using the normal network-protocol through my finder). what is the speed you get with your device on windows and do you think this low speed is normal for my setup? thanks a lot for you help!!

Hi, thanks for sharing the video. I have a question, how do you access your photos/catalogue from a remote computer?
  • This is really useful. I have been struggling for a few years. A couple of questions if you don’t mind: 1. Do I set up the iScsi drive on the NAS where I already have all the photos that I access from my PC using LR? Do I then just move the existing photos and catalogue to this new drive? 2. Can I access this drive to look at the photos on the NAS from different computers and laptops on the same drive but each using its own LR? Also can I edit these photos from the different devices? 3. I do a lot of travel photography and save photos on my laptop. Do I just move then from the laptop to the iScsi drive on return? Thanks for this amazing and simple to understand video.
  • Helpful video. Question: when in the setting up of the iSCSI Lun Properties' "Capacity (GB)" field do you put in an amount of space you will need in the present or for future Lightroom's images to be stored/used? I have 3TB of images and growing. But the lightroom catalog is just 2gb.

Are you able to make this target present on more than one computer in the network? I set this up on my desktop, thank you very much, and would love to connect to it on my laptop as well. I tried doing so, but at the point of 'Quick Connect' - it finds the target but is 'unable to login to the target'

Hi, great video ! Do you also put the Catalog on the SCSI drive or do you keep it local ( and back it up some other way ? )
  • @nicks6913
Something I noticed with mine is that it wasnt showing Mapped iSCSI LUNs so for anyone who doesnt see the Disk in Disk MGMT, go back to iSCSI Manager, click Target, Action, Edit and then the Mapping tab and make sure the name is checked.
  • Wait, so I shouldn't set up iSCSI on my laptop? My laptop is my main computer, so what should I do in the case that I move my computer and want to access my files from the laptop in a different location on another wifi?

Great video. Please can you make a similar video for how to set a similar set up but with Mac OS instead of Windows? Thanks!
  • Reason I ask is because I got my Drive L to work, and it worked well, But I could not see it anywhere but as a folder on the desktop where my NAS lives
