I first went to Chaweng beach in April, 1993. Only one hotel on the beach with air con, and the main road wasn't paved until about year 2000.

I stayed there (Chewang) for a few months back in 2006/2007. It was much nicer then. Looks like hell on earth now. Sad to see.

I was there in 1989 sitting in a beachside bar when two early to mid-20 English guys flew pass on their motorcycles and hit a dog on the street came off and skinned themselves. Chatted to them while waiting for help and they said they had just come from Phuket where they had scored work as extras on the Sean Penn and Michael J Fox Vietnam war film "Casualties of War". They were pissed that after getting lucky their luck had run out.

Could not wait to get off the island, was there 32 year ago, paradise. !!. Now I’m old and don’t do the music there and the crowds. So I’m on my way to Chumpon, enjoy kids….
