In 2017, the Rohingya people in Myanmar faced a genocide brought on by Buddhist extremists and the military. But something else was fueling the violence, inciting people, and spreading hatred - Facebook and their algorithm was helping tear the country apart.

Over 700,000 Rohingya people fled violence perpetrated by the military in their home country of Myanmar in 2017, seeking safety in neighboring Bangladesh. The majority of them continue to live, years later, in Kutupalong Refugee Camp. Since the beginning of this crisis, UNICEF has been working with the Bangladesh government and other partners to deliver relief to children and families living in the refugee camps and settlements and in neighboring host communities. Help UNICEF continue to support Rohingya refugee children and families. Your donation can make a difference.

It seems like nobody - no media, no politicians, and few other YouTubers - are willing to cover this topic, because it isn't as flashy or easy to understand as Ukraine or the Middle East. Thank you SO MUCH, Johnny, for bringing this to your audience. Edit: omg the replies 🫠
  • @lazykasoku5590
I am a refugee from Myanmar. One of the many ethnic minorities that have been through the same thing as the Rohingya. Now living in the U.S. I am blessed to be here unlike many other refugees who didn’t have the same opportunity. Thank you Johnny for bringing these stories to light.
  • @shahinahmod
As a Bangladeshi, I feel proud to give shelter to those people. However, the international community has to be more active in preventing this type of Genocide. And they should take more initiative to solve this issue.
  • @studynow9284
As a Bangladeshi, I'm so happy to see that you're covering the story. Thanks a lot!!! ❤
  • As a Burmese, it's hard to imagine how we lived before 2010s. Politics was always like "big brother is watching". We hardly ever talked about it, and those who did were imprisoned or disappeared. Cell phones were like a vanity for the rich to show off. Internet was unheard of. Then came the democracy (kind of), and every aspect of our lives got better for like 10 years just before the 2021 coup. Now, full-blown civil war is brewing and it feels like our lives are regressing. It sucks to be born in this country.
  • @Jacj_
As a Burmese citizen, I'm certain the military dictators played a big role in the genocide. It would be great if you also covered other terrible things the Burmese military has done since the military coup in 2021. I truly wish the best to the Rohingya people and I feel bad for the people who got brainwashed into thinking Rohingya are bad. Truly the best of luck. 😔
  • @sorenskousen7468
I've been completely shocked that so little attention has been given to this, hopefully this video can help get it into the public sphere.
  • The Dark Side 1. Anger leads to the dark side. 2. Resist the temptation to be angry. 3. Anger only serves the evil one. 4. Anger only gets you in trouble too.
  • @shoilee20
I'm a Bangladeshi and a development worker. I have seen the horrific situation and the grivences of the millions of Rohingya people in 2017 to till now. Thank you very much for covering this.
  • @sandizmeme7399
Finally, someone giving attention to this crisis. I live in Bangladesh and went there last year. the place is a mess. The Rohingya people living there survived an actual genocide in this modern age and nobody knows about it. Back in 2017 when this happened was the first time in my life I realized how easy it is to get away with committing a genocide. The people of the world cares more about a genocide that already happened than the ones that are happening right now.
  • Thank you Johnny and Max Fisher for this thorough reporting. The time has long past for us to be in disbelief that social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, have such power to propel hate speech and misinformation into real-world massacres and genocide. I got chills and emotional as I watched it, knowing that something very similar is happening in Gaza right now.
  • @Tamtamlara
Thank you Johnny for this video , I relate deeply to it as I am a Palestinian and been subjected to Facebook genocide support policies it marked my insta profile with word terrorist for having free Palestine in my bio also hiding my stories from my friends and views going from 150 to zero whenever sharing about what’s happening in Gaza
  • @piaggio
I know everyone is rightly concerned about Palestine and Israel right now, but thank you for highlighting the suffering of these people as well. There are so many populations in need of help and care in the world.
  • @Vobo-Ghure
From Bangladeshis we thanks you Johnny Harris for spreading this story what even most main stream medias have failed to cover... I'm huge supporter of Independent journalism and I love what you are doing here... Bangladesh is not a rich country yet we have the largest refugee camp which is not good for us Bangladeshis or the rohingya peoples of Myanmar... And I hope the rohingya peoples will get to return thire home safely...
  • @azizjamil1819
Thank you so much for covering this topic. I was born in Myanmar and grown up there. Unfortunately, even at school muslims students have faced discrimination and hatred. Particularly, the Rohingya muslims are not allowed to travel from one state to another. The government completely blocked their future, which is becoming dark day by day for them. While the international organizations have failed to give the rights to them. The saddest part is that most of Buddhist civilian supported government during the genocide upon Rohingya muslims, from which we can learn that many Buddhist of the country are narrow minded and it seems hard to see development of the country. In 2023, not only muslims suffering for survival but also Buddhist civilian, i hope they finally have seen the hidden extremists brutal face of the military junta. I hope the civilian at least treat the muslims with respect and love.

I'm thankful to you for bringing this information to my attention. It's people like you who make the world into a better place.
  • @onyxlim
Poverty, corruption, lack of education, inability to discern fake news are ingredients for this atrocious genocide. Let us stay vigilant nowadays; with the rise of AI, things are going to get worse for more impoverished nations. Thank you for the independent and fearless journalism, Johnny
  • @severed6s
I've practiced buddhism for many years of my life because of the purity of peace, happiness, and compassion that I continue to find in the community of practitioners. To know that there is such a hateful person who claims to be a buddhist monk breaks my heart.
  • @Prezes1892
I can’t express how much I value your work. This has probably been the most important episode yet. Thank you.
