This bargain E36 M3 beat my Z06's lap time!

Published 2022-11-19
What do you get when you spend less than $10K on a 1998 BMW E36 generation M3 with over 200,000 miles and install suspension, wheels, tires, exhaust, and a few other mods? You get a street-legal track car that can put down some serious lap times, with ZERO GUILT.

You can spend 10X the money today and get more than double the power... but you also get an extra ton of weight and all the running costs that come with it.

I took this one out on track to see what the new generation of sports cars is getting wrong.

E36 M3 best car ever :) Nice lap at the end! Was funny how y’all were thinking the same thing at the same time in the same model cars lol

I have daily driven an E36 ('97 328is and now a ''97 M3/4/5) since 2009 and I still can't get over them. The sound, the look, the combination of comfort and performance - they are just an absolute sweetheart. I"m getting older now and am eyeing something a bit more cushy for daily use (and family hauling) but I venture to say that I will always have one of these in the stable. They are simply 90's perfection <3

E36 in general a great platform. Of course, I’ve had a 95 M3. And a 93 325is was my first track car. Now tracking a 97 M3 and its capability exceeds my skills. I may be a bit biased toward the chassis. 🤔

It's fun to see someone who isn't already familiar with the platform enjoying it so much. I wonder sometimes if I need to get out more, or if my "perfect" car really is as perfect as I think it is. But I drove 450 miles on Friday to a track day, did six 30-minute sessions on Saturday, then drove 450 miles home on Sunday without a hiccup. Hit 270k miles on the way up Friday. And then Monday morning my daughter "borrowed" the car and drove to work. I've never seen anything like the factory spring-loaded adjustable front GT splitter and the risers on the rear GT wing (what most people call LTW parts) on any other car. These cars can be such easy daily drivers or such great track cars - and everyone who owns one gets to decide how they want to build theirs.

E36 M3 is the best kept secret. 11 year owner here. My sedan carries 5 passengers, full spare, drives amazing and bullet proof engine. Simple upgrades include: suspension, tires, stromung exhaust and singke stage flywheel. Just perfect all around.
  • Awesome video! As an e36 m3 owner myself its awesome to see the true potential of the chassis. Ahead of its time!
  • @JNatella
Dude you're doing a good job on these vids. I look forward to them. 👊
  • Great video. Wish I never sold my ‘94 E36 M3 3.0 - euro spec from Japan. Did Stoptech ST40s, BC Coilovers. Miss that car!

First time finding the channel--this was great! Real high quality content, agree with those that said this thing is going to blow up 🧨 💥 Also... Dammit.... I want an e36 m3.....
  • Love those wheels I got the 18”255 all around R7 more fun that the new m3 feel all the power band in the heart 😃
  • @Euphorica
The shifting is probably the worst thing on these cars. Regardless of flavour.(5 spd, 6 spd, 4 banger, 6 cylinder ...) Great cars overall though. A lot of fun and quick.
  • Great video. I have a 97 M3 coupe beater with suspension and z3 rack. Also have a low miles mint 97 C5 . Selling the C5 because the M3 is soooo much fun to drive and the feed back is phenomenal. Wife thinks I'm mental...probably true.

Dude I got the apex set on the same deal!!!! I got mine in anthracite, I just wish I got kinda deeper dished ones (don’t know the actual term concave?) but they are amazing now I just gotta get the floating bmw center caps now get rid of the ugly apex ones.
  • @ianstropus
I have the same spec (but black) with coilovers/sway bar/200tw tires and it’s an absolute dream to drive. Favorite car I’ve driven so far. Selling it soon as my buddy has a ls6/t56 swapped e36 coupe on coilovers. Cant wait to drive it on track.
