Danny Garcia opens up about struggles outside of boxing | Garcia vs Benavidez Post Fight Interview

Published 2022-07-31
Danny Garcia opens up about his struggles with anxiety and depression with Jim Gray in his post fight interview after defeating Jose Benavidez Saturday, July 30, at the Barclays Center.

"The pressure of life. The pressure of boxing, of being a good dad... It's been weighing on me for a year and a half and I know the only way to get better is to fight, and to win. I'm a fighter this what I do, and I love to do."

Rarely do we see fighters at this level open up about such personal issues, and in a moment of very real emotions, Danny Garcia showed us there's so much more to fighters then just the opponents across from in the ring.

The pressure of boxing. The pressure of being a good Dad. This part shot me right in the feels. I struggle with wanting to achieve greatness but having overwhelming guilt that crushes me when I don’t give all the attention to my son that I think he deserves.

Good for him. He may not know it, but just by him opening up on a national stage like that, he probably helped a lot of people that are going through similar struggles, knowing they are not alone. Hope the best for Danny Garcia, he’s always been a class act within the sport.

That was a career defining performance by Danny Garcia. And, Jose Benavidez has nothing to be ashamed of, he fought to win in every second of that fight, and fans will love him for that. Terrific fight, and a great example of the sweet science. Danny's post fight confession was so honest in sincere.

Man i feel his pain. Going through depression all alone without anyone to talk i feel this! Got a rare Autoimmune disease since 2019 & been out of work since then lost everything My Girlfriend, money saved on hospital bills & medication, my friends, my sanity, my prime. If not for watching boxing & see the struggle fighters go through idk where i be & this just another thing to relate to!! I appreciate this!

Man.. social media is a monster.. it’s one of the main reason for depression today..
  • People who see this as a weakness are fools. It makes him a million times stronger to be able to admit it to millions of people. Respect.

This is why I love boxing. These guys are modern day gladiators so when you see them show relatable emotions and tears, you really know that we all go through this.

Hearing him express himself and then reading all the comments of people who are going through the same thing gives me hope and assured me that I’m not alone! I hope each and everyone of us stay strong and inspire each other to express our emotions and spread positivity
