507s are the reason i liked trains, 507012 was my first ever ride on a train, and when i saw the clip of it being taken to scrap, i honestly thought i was gonna Cry. RIP PEPs.

My uncle had a farm between Hooton and Capenhurst with bridge over the railway and as a child I have many happy memories of trying to get the driver to toot the horn as they they ran at top speed along that stretch. These units will be sadly missed. A loyal servant to Merseyrail for many years!
  • @123penfold
507003 the one attached to 507001 was the last unit to be overhauled . So alongside 507016 you have been on all the really special units that day.

I remember the 507’s coming into service as a small child, living in Southport, and my Grandfather working on the railways there. I can just about remember what went before them!

Nick 507001 is being preserved at the Tanat Valley Railway

The 6-car 507s will be running at morning peak between Southport and Liverpool _ Hunts Cross until Septober 2024.

Excellent video. I find the 507s nostalgic too, because they remind me of the 313s which I used regularly. Also, we have used the PEPs a few times on our channel, hopefully we’ll be able to get them again before they go. ~ Daniel
  • was on 507 007 not too long ago from one of the Liverpool stations out to Birkenhead North, was lovely to see them one last time 777 001 rolled through on an empty move too

Personally I really like the 777s and, as sad as it is, am happy that the 507s are going as they are just too old! I think I've done my last 507 now back earlier this year but the 777s are cool units so it'll be cool to see them everywhere! Regardless it's a shame to see the 507s go of course but they are just too old :(
  • Such a shame to see these units being scrapped. 507001 is being preserved but I will miss them on passenger service.

Although I've barely travelled on Merseyrail, the thing I liked about the 507s and 508s were their variations of livery designs which the 777s unfortunately do not carry. Will be a shame to see them go, but I'm happy I was able to travel on a few 507s in my lifetime. Oh well, at least I have the 508 car in the 455/7s as my last option 😂

Hey, aren't you glad you changed your plan? That was an amazing coincidence - especially when 016 turned up on the other platform! I recognise the feeling you're trying to describe, as I was about your age (and living in Bristol) when the Sprinters appeared - just 2-car 150's and 155 units to begin with - and often replacing rakes of Mk 1 and Mk 2 coaches hauled by the likes of Class 25, 27, 31, 33, 37 or 47 locos; not to mention a whole myriad of first generation DMU classes - which we called antiques! The 156's were a slight improvement, then finally, the 158s. All the same, a whole way of life was gone...!
  • @andrewnorth170
Crazy how you managed to find the 001 and 016 again :)
  • @SouthCoastTrains
I have a point to point journey for you! Millbrook (Marston Vale Line) to Millbrook (SWR mainline)
  • @mcollier4566
Ironically my final 507s were also 001 and then 016! Nice to have a very brief swansong quite by chance for the Grand National! Was nice to see 100% 507s one last time completely by chance of being in the right place at the right time and wandering down to a station!

Recently on the way to Aberystwyth from Birmingham, had to take the rail replacement bus to Shrewsbury to get our train, and whilst we waited there we saw 2 507's in the platform. I thought it was odd as Shrewsbury isn't electrified, didn't see the loco at the front, however they were on their way for scrap. 507020 was at the rear.
  • As someone who was raised on the Southern Region, I have many fond memories of riding the Class 508s, and still try and seek out the 508 TSs still in use as part of the Class 455/7s, plus all the occasions seeing the original PEP units stored at the back of Wimbledon Depot. They've served the country superbly, given over 45 years of loyal service, and deserve our admiration in retirement.

My last was 507 032, in 2021. They still had 508s back then.
