Labor will need ‘big bang’ on cost of living to secure next election

Published 2024-05-19
Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says the Albanese government will need a “big bang” on cost of living to be able to win the next election.

Labor has nudged ahead in the first Newspoll since Tuesday's budget, but voters are not convinced it's enough to bring down inflation.

“Peter Dutton will be trying to do his own in terms of bigger tax cuts. So what’s Labor going to do?” Mr Clennell said.

“What’s very interesting for Jim Chalmers’ ambitions; he’s at the centre of both bounces.”

A "big bang" is right. That will be the door closing on a most unfortunate and disastrous period in Australian politics.
