It's official: There are now more fat people than skinny people in the world. Obesity is the most significant health crisis on the planet. For the first time in history, children are facing shorter lives than their parents.

Over the last 35 years, obesity rates have more than doubled, leading to a massive and rapid increase in heart disease, kidney problems, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes. How did we go from obesity rates of 9% to 30% in less than a generation?

Presented by overweight and diabetic Chef Simon Gault, this documentary examines the science behind a re-examination of traditionally accepted health advice and the emergence of new evidence that makes sense of the looming health problems we face. Gault talks to experts from around the world and allows himself to be a human guinea pig to improve his own health.

  • I visited a so called 3rd world country about 10 years ago from the UK they were eating fresher and healthier food than us.

As a pharmacist I’m amazed that so many of the patients I talk to don’t even know type 2 diabetes is reversible. We have medical standards and guidelines that mandate people are prescribed several classes of drugs for metabolic syndrome-related diseases, but nothing requiring actual education about the illness itself. These drugs are nothing more than a tourniquet on a severed limb and are not meant as a long term solution!

I watched the film of my parent's wedding from 1956. In a crowd of about 50 people, I only saw one person who was overweight (but not obese). I was so amazed. I recently quit processed food (especially ultra-processed), my back pain has completely disappeared, and I've lost 15 pounds. I didn't realize how bloated I was, I can bend over much easier now. And NO cravings (I'm eating high fat low carb, NO processed food whenever possible).

I was pre diabetic and had insulin resistance but I turned things around by completely changing my diet and exercise and now at 39 years old I’m completely normal. I am very healthy and happy now.
  • I just started working at my local grocery store. Seeing what junk people buy is mind blowing. Some people will spend over $200 in groceries and everything is processed. Not one fresh fruit or vegetables. It’s sad…
  • Almost 20 years ago, I went into public school as a new middle school teacher. My own kids were in kindergarten and second grade. When I saw how fat and unhealthy my students were, how much processed garbage and sugar the school was providing, I decided to not return the next year. I also took my kids out. I wanted them to eat real food. We went all the way through high school. My kids are now college grads, married, and both are very fit and healthy and can cook. They love to eat food. Real food.

My wife is an RN who was working with post-operative heart patients and part of what she did was educating them on exercise, nutrition etc. She said the average age was around 50 years old. She told me that at least 60% of them ate fast food on a daily basis and acted as if they had no idea that this was not a healthy way to live.
  • If you cut sugar and seed oils from your diet, I promise you will see incredible increases in your health, mood, sleep, etc.

I love Australian people. In the US we have to pretend being obese isn't a health condition because we don't want to hurt anyone's sensitive feelings

I was the weird kid in school because my mom packed me a lunch of a whole wheat bread sandwich with some whole grain crackers and a piece of fruit, maybe some homemade cookies. My friends all had Lunchables, gushers, fruit by the foot, etc. (I’m 34). I was always the thinnest person in my classes, won all the obstacle courses and relay races, had tons of energy, got straight As. At the time, I was bummed that I didn’t get to eat all the popular 90s processed “foods” but, as an adult, I rarely crave sugar/sweets/junk food. I’m so grateful to my mom for raising me on good food. I was a middle school teacher in my 20s and always paid attention to what my kids brought for lunch; I noticed the same trend I’d seen in the 90s. The kids who brought a homemade sandwich with carrots and fresh fruit were my top earners, all in good shape, had excellent concentration. I feel for the kids who don’t have parents willing or able to provide them with a nutritious lunch every day. It really has a lasting impact.

The sad thing is that in the US most people would consider him at the start as "perfectly normal and healthy"
  • I also believe alcohol addiction is at its core an addiction to sugar. The only addictive chemical that crosses the blood brain barrier.

I became type 2 diabetic. I took it serious and completely changed my life. Been doing keto for two years. I list 100lbs in a year and have maintained it off. I was off all medication after 6 months of the life change. No metformin or nothing. Living free is amazing.
  • @craigzilla100
This is powerful stuff.. I think it should be required to show this video to middle schoolers across the country.. and adults at their jobs as part of insurance wellness programs.
  • As an American, this is an epidemic! I don’t care what others say, sugar is addicting! Unlike illicit drugs, SUGAR IS EVERYWHERE!!! I would have liked to see the 3 months after results.
  • @monicacollins8289
Dr. Thornley, you perfectly described my own sugar addiction. Its real, and a daily struggle and temptation. Discovering and acknowledging that I'm an addict, no different than a alcoholic, helps to deal with it. I lost and kept off 75+ lbs by living a ketogenic lifestyle for the last 4 years. Cheers from Northern California.
