    Also remember that there is an annual limit for gifts. When contributing to a 529 it is considered gifted money. The annual limit is high I think at 18k per parent per person, and you can bunch 5 years in one year partially or totally, but then cannot gift more (or just top off the annual limit) for those 5 years.
  • Open a brokerage account. Invest the money in index. Your kids don't need to use their gift money. Teach them the finest aspects of saving.

    529 with specific kid as beneficiary or ugtma. i would say ugtma. so subject only to kiddie tax and leave the 529 savings to the parents.
