Excellent film with an excellent cast. These actors had, almost, all done military service so they knew what was expected from them, that is why 50s British war films are so believable.

The Sergeant at the end was Neil McCarthy. He played a mild mannered Welsh soldier in Zulu, made the year before The Hill. Great actor, sadly missed, dying at the age of 53.

My Dad did National Service in the early 1950s. One of his mates ended up in Military Prison. It was absolute hell, but apparently it was the fittest he’d ever been when he came out🤣

Harry Andrews was a great actor. Never better than here.

This whole scene to the ending when the military prisoners return to their cells is utterly amazing. The acting from Harry Andrews is exquisite. There isn't an actor who could have played that scene but him. His demeanour is gargantuan.

A film that's never underrated by those that know it; just not as well known as it deserves to be.

Got this movie on DVD Brilliant one of Connery's finest! 🤠💂🇬🇧🔫
  • I believe Harry Andrews was actually a sergeant major in real life during ww2.

Great 'Citizen Kane'-type shot beginning at :41, showing that even though the prisoners are getting out of control, the Sergeant Major (Harry Andrews) isn't intimidated in the least.
