As a german i'll have to give valve credit. The cranes doing nothing for the whole day is very realistic in Germany.

loving how regardless of how much fancy tech we get, it still all boils down to flat 2d textures if you get out far enough
  • @Sandbowl
5:08 This transition is more advanced and realistic than source 2 could ever be

Another needlessly deatiled CS video about something 0.0001 percent of humans care about. Love it keep it up

6:35: So you're telling me the plane is a plane?
  • @beszmi
5:10 that transition was smooothhh! Good job! :)

the way old skyboxes made everything look gigantic and incredibly far away just gives some specific kind of atmosphere that i love so much. i wish people carried that feeling over in some way to modern games more often

Philip, your content is second to none. I rarely comment and I think there are many who silently share my enthusiasm. I never miss a video on any of your channels (at least all the ones I know of). Thanks for the high effort, high quality stuff

i can already see the huge grin you got on your face when you made the transition at 5:08, philip

That transition at 5:09... I had to rewatch it a few times. Stunning.

I have always had a soft spot for GoldSrc skybox textures, they had an eerie, liminal and desolate vibe to them. Fascinating stuff, it's uncanny how Philip can create content from thin air. I love these breakdowns of Source engine and Counter-Strike levels that he makes, I could watch him talk about it all day long.

0:42 been so long since I've heard that sound that I almost forgot it even existed
  • 6:03 Not CS-related, but I really missed when racing games used that kind of method of selling the size of the world. Games like earlier Need for Speed games like Underground 2, Most Wanted and Carbon made it feel like it has a bigger world than the recent entries despite being objectively smaller. Meanwhile, modern racing games like the recent NFS ones have bigger worlds with towering buildings but somehow feel emptier and barren, no matter how hard they try to make it lively.

5:29 something i find very interesting is that despite de_overpass being set in Berlin, the 2D row of buildings is actually from Prague in czech republic. You can literally see the Prague castle on the image. Also the tower is not even from Berlin, its the Nuremberg TV Tower.
  • @ShonkV
i am so excited to see what they will do to the huge DangerZone maps in source 2

I NEED more source 2 skybox analysis, they look incredible.
