** LYRICS **
[HILDEGARD] Whither have the worthy gone, oh, where is fair Gawain?
Where is gallant Galahad to take the bridle rein?
[WHITNEY] Is there not a white knight upon a fiery steed?
Late at night I toss and turn and I dream of what I need

[H] I need a hero
I shall hold out for a hero 'til the end of the night
I pray he be hale,
Wingèd of heel
And newly return’d from the fight
[W] I need a hero
I shall hold out for a hero 'til the morning light
He must be assur’d
E’er true to his word
With a wit that will thrill and excite
Thrill and excite

Erelong at the witching hour within my reverie
Somewhere just beyond the veil someone reacheth out for me
[H] Racing on a courser and clad in gleaming mail
I shall answer none but he who bringeth me the grail

[W] Aaah, I need a hero
I shall hold out for a hero 'til the end of the night
Could I but afford
My very own sword
I would not require his might
[H] I need a hero
I shall hold out for a hero 'til the morning light
By god was he blessed
E’er true to his quest
A man of whom Chaucer will write

[W] Up where the dragons glide near heaven above
Out on a storm-tossed odyssey
Verily doth a saintly champion ride toward me
[H] Through the wind, and the chill, and the rain
The plague, and the flood
I can feel his approach like a fire in my blood

[BOTH] I need a hero
I shall hold out for a hero ‘til the end of the night
I pray he be hale,
Wingèd of heel
And newly return’d from the fight
I need a hero
I shall hold out for a hero ‘til the morning light
A knight, not a pawn
A true paragon
With armor and eyes shining bright
I need a hero

'Twas pure joy to work with you on this, Hildegard! You’re a badass musician with the voice of an angel. Keep on blingin’!
  • 13th century: illuminated manuscripts 21st century: animated manuscripts

"A KNIGHT, not a pawn; a true paragon" Hot damn, that's a good line.
  • Fun fact, back in the days of Shakespeare, wit referred to a man's member. So "a wit that will thrill and excite" takes on a whole new level of meaning 😂
  • @chessire1393
Them - "Covers are never as good as the original." Me - Scoff "Has thee never heard of fair lady Hildegard Von Blingn'?"
  • @rosebyanyname
“A man of whom Chaucer would write” is a BRILLIANT LINE
  • @XIIconstNvChr
3:14 the way the ladies looked back at the knight they robbed and ditched when they sang "a knight, not a PAWN" get a good chuckle outta me 😂
  • I think my favourite line is "Erelong at the witching hour Within my revery" Just gives me shivers
  • "I need a hero!" they cry mournfully, as they literally steal a knight's sword and shield and hitch a ride on a dragon, after surviving a journey worthy of song. Ladies, thou wert the heroes all along.
  • @soldier.boy69
"A man of whom Chaucer will write" "fetch the leeches" Listening to this, (literally) chillin' inside my chambers and I'm dying here, amazing job.
  • @TheMrILB
"Racing on a courser and clad in gleaming mail. I shall answer none but he who bringeth me the grail." I cannot emphasise enough how genius these lyrics are!
  • @justJOSHinBRO
"There's nothing better than the Shrek version of Holding Out for a Hero" Hildegard von Blingin': "Will thou holdest my ale!!!"
  • @Galistarwater
I love the last bit, "A Knight, not a pawn; a true paragon with with armour and eyes shining bright - I need a hero!" And then the ladies were like, "Screw it. Let's be heroines ourselves and ride on the back of a dragon armed with a shield and sword!"
  • @Raguleader
I love how, by the end, they just decide to stop holding out and just become the heroes they need.
  • @Acebender
"I can feel his approach like a fire in my blood" "Fetch the leeches!"
  • @RavenKing95
"I shall answer none but he who bringeth me the Grail." This is why earlier she was looking for Gawain or Galahad, both Grail Knights depending on your source. Hildegard von Blingin: Come for the tunes, stay for the medieval memes.

2 badass women sing and fly off on a dragon. Historians: and they were good friends.
