"Not enough memory to run Paint" is such a Vista thing for an error message to say.
  • @Fortuna1
This pc now passed for lots generations in 1 hour
  • It's kinda fun to see how much Windows has changed since Windows 1.0. we went from only having a basic colour as the backgroundto having the ability to change the alignment of the taskbar icons and start menu, changing the desktop icons and basically having another computer inside your own in Windows 11

Wouldn’t it be ironic that the Windows 98 PC could not install Windows 98?
  • I've been around PCs since the beginning, but I didn't realize Windows 1.0 was ever released. I do remember 2.0 coming out and being referred to as the "first usable" Windows in the Windows 3.x Era, but I was not aware that 1.0 ever made it to public release... learned something!

    Next... Windows NT 3.1 -> NT 3.5 -> NT 3.51 -> NT 4.0 -> 2000 -> XP -> Vista -> 7 with all the drivers... chipset.. vga... sound.. pnpisa ... etc

"wow, this is code written in 1985 and it still works 30 years later" X11: am I a joke to you?

This brings back memories. There's an interesting thing to note about the Windows 7 upgrade editions. They were made to work with Vista, and, as we've seen in this video, they do. But a lot of people were coming from XP. Upgrade editions mentioned that they work with both, but this wasn't quite true in practice. Upgrade editions that detected XP would refuse to actually install 7 as an upgrade. You actually had to do a complete reinstall. And worse, you go through all that, then try to activate your upgrade license to find that it doesn't work because it didn't count nuking XP as an upgrade, even though you didn't have much choice in the matter. You could actually have your cake and eat it though. Upgrade licenses have a trick to them that may or may not still work today. But back in the day, you do your steps with a fresh, non-upgrade install of 7. But when it's done, don't bother with activation yet. You reinstall again with your upgrade disc, picking the upgrade option! So you upgrade from Windows 7, to Windows 7. A waste of time, yes, but when the upgrade part is done, you can actually activate it. How did we find this out back in the day? Lots of people went through this during the era, where lots of people were moving from XP to 7 and bought upgrade editions because they were cheaper and were coming from either XP or Vista. You went searching on the internet about it because you upgraded from XP to 7. Upgrade license said it works going from XP to 7. Why doesn't it work? And you find out that that was how to do it from others who had the same problem. Fun times. Also, some stores didn't even have non-upgrade versions on sale. I recall never seeing them at my local Best Buy at the time. And besides, if you already had XP or Vista, why pay more money than you had to? The final kicker is that this trick also works for fresh installs done with an upgrade edition with no previous version of Windows installed beforehand. Not sure if it ever actually stopped working.

Over an hour of Michael MJD? My quarantine just got a million times better!
  • @AnimalFacts
How about doing the different versions of OS/2 on it?
  • @thatETTYT
i just wanna remind you that you just watched 1 hour of installing windows
  • @pawer_themaw
I always love when he changes the theme. Also, can we just talk about how that old PC could succesfully upgrade with NO memory and CPU issues?
  • @crasheffort
This was a good example of how finicky it was to upgrade your pc back in the day. I had to reinstall windows many times when it would mess up, and had to upgrade from previous versions since I always had upgrade versions.
  • @devilzwishbone
The reason why the shutdown feature worked on newer versions of Windows is because it will be running a shell command (which sends a command to ms-dos) most likely carrying out a shutdown /s command which will instruct the operating system to shutdown and power off the computer
  • This was awesome work. It really shows how much work Microsoft has put into backwards compatibility feature.
  • @noahbeaudin6478
The greatest upgrade video of all time! I Love your content, Michael!

windows 10 supports the intel celeron. my grandma has a mini pc with a intel chipset + celeron running win 10
  • @Tom-yu9if
This video really drives home how annoying windows 11 requirements are. If I want to install Windows 11 on a potato I should be able to. It never used to bother them
