Alien Probe, Sentient Machine, Nuclear Weapon, or Junk? What is the Betz Mystery Sphere?

In the Spring of 1974, a large brush fire swept across the property owned by Antoine and Gerri Betz.

While assessing the damage, they noticed something very out of place.

Lying in the smoldering grass, was a highly polished, metal sphere. This became known as the Betz sphere or the Betz orb.

Terry Betz, Antoine and Jerri's 21-year-old son, went to pick up the sphere. Although it was only 8-inches in diameter, it was extremely heavy.

Then the Betz family did something with the sphere that would change their lives forever. Something that the family would come to regret.

They brought it home.

It's a bit of an old story, but I was able to dig up new information not in the last batch of podcasts/articles about the sphere. LOOK, I am skeptical and I think it's PROBABLY man-made. BUT, the sphere was examined by a LOT of people -- including US military scientists. I have an open mind about this one.
  • Honestly the most unbelievable aspect of this story is the fact that the Government gave it back initially.

Can’t help but think of Bob Lazar when this sphere is talked about. When Bob was reverse engineering the propulsion system in the UFO he was working on, he talks about how it was “powered” by a sphere that was roughly the size of a basketball that had anti-gravity properties. Maybe the two are similar! Maybe not! But very cool to connect other UFO stories and conspiracy theories with one another. I wonder if Bob would recognize this sphere 👀

My grandfather joined the military in WW2, worked his way up supposedly, and was black ops in korea doing terrorist attacks against korean targets. He tested a lot of stuff for the military too, such as jet packs for instance. I never believed him until I saw a story on jet packs a few years back that gave the same reason they weren't widely used as my grandfather did to me as a kid (too much fuel expenditure, too short of a distance). So now I wonder if his idea that the military creates UFOs is true too. He said they'd fly above the base and could remotely shut off any electronics. That they ran on magnetism and refueled through magnetic fields and could even siphon power from the planet itself. The magnetic properties of this sphere remind me of what he described as its fuel/energy source.

I live in SW Florida. About three years ago, I was at a barn liquidation sale near the glades. It was an elder gentlemen who was wanting to clear all the clutter on the property. Farm equipment, tools, tractor out back. In the barn were tables set up with anything and everything on them. I saw this antique dark brown leather bag with actually real wooden handles on it. I went to pick it up and it was heavy. I was like, shoot. This still has the ball in it. Thought it would be cool to see what an old bowling ball would look like and feel. I took it out and it was not a glossy looking ball with a shiny finish. It was a smoky black color. The guy came towards me because I was turning the ball all which ways and I could not find the holes for my fingers. I was like wow, this old ball can still be customized and drilled for my grip... He said the ball was special. That I did not need to ever drill holes in it. That the ball moves by itself. He was leaning all over me and made me feel strange. Very awkward moment. But then my daughter and wife saved me and called for me to come over to them. So I handed the ball back to the guy. Usually bowling balls, even not drilled still have the weight and information on them. This didn't. And I have held 15lb balls before, this was definately heavier. It did not feel like a normal ball either, it had like a ting feeling to it. When I was walking away, I looked back and it looked like the guy was talking or even whispering something to that ball. I know the Florida heat gets to people, but that was just a very crazy experience. Coming across this video, it just gets me thinking...

I am a night custodian at an elementary school and I listen to your channel every single day while I work alone. This channel has easily become my absolute favorite on all of YouTube. (Not directly linked to this video, I just happened to finally comment after this video) Keep doing what you do and we'll keep learning with you! Thank you 🤙

I don't think this was mentioned, but the fact that the family was investigating a brush fire on their property when they discovered it could mean that it came in from outside our planet and was superheated on re-entry and started a fire. I wonder if they found it in a crater also?
  • @nickcraft6235
I grew up in Jacksonville and my family was friends with the Betz family. This was a legit object with unexplainable properties. I know it's hard to know what to believe sometimes, but this story is real.
  • I imagine aliens discovering us and thinking "they are so underdeveloped, let's send them a child's toy to encourage their scientific curiosity."
  • @Belleplainer
There's a theory in chemistry that at a certain point heavier elements will start to get more stable, and might even become non-radioactive. The largest element right now is oganesson, which has a half-life of 0.0007 seconds, so extremely unstable. Maybe 140 is in that stable range.

Wow! I had never heard about the Betz mystery sphere. Thank you for this great video.

I've just recently discovered the Why Files, and I have to admit that I'm hooked. AJ's delivery, coupled with hecklefish's interjections, make for an eminently listenable experience. Well done!
  • This is just a small part of the whole story. This family experienced a bunch of "odd phenomena" prior to this. UFO sightings around the property and strange noises WITHIN. The family stopped talking to everyone about this but Astonishing legends podcast was able to get a few more interviews with the family.

I'm in my late fifties so, what I or those in my generation were shows like,"In Search Of" or "Unexplained Mysteries" not bad shows but, since checking out WF, I'm a fan for the next half of my life!!! Thanks AJ & Hecklefish!!!.
  • Thought I'd add my weird story to the mix. My grandfather was in the 101st in Europe during WW2. While things were starting to wrap up, him and a bunch of guys spent a couple nights in a castle. Everyone was looking for the "spoils of war" and he happened across an old sword and sheath. There was writing on both pieces, but it wasn't anything he'd seen before. There weren't any jewels on the sheath or sword and it wasn't gold, but he liked the carvings in the metal, so he sent it home where it was waiting for him in Palo Alto a few months later when he got back home. A coworker was looking at the sword on day after work and noticed how easily you could bend it, something grandpa never tried. At the time he was a welder working at Stanford, so thought maybe someone there could tell him about his sword. He tried different deptments for a could of weeks before finding someone that could tell him about his looted find. Grandpa asked how old it was. the guy said it wasn't the age that makes it special, but where it was from. The guy said it was from Mu. Grandpa didn't know where that was or had ever heard of it. I assume the guy went into more detail, but Grandpa didn't elaborate, only to say the sword was now in storage up at their house at Lake Shasta. I always bugged him to see the sword and finally when I was about 17 and up at their lake house, he took me under the deck where a bunch of barrels where. One by on he opened each barrel and dumped the contents out, becoming more frustrated with each one. Finally saying one of the barrels was missing! 20 years later, that story came back to me. Grandpa wasn't one to tell tall tales or exaggerate, so when a search of the net told me that Mu was the Atlantis of the Pacific, I thought someone at Stanford was messing with him. First, Atlantis isn't (or wasn't) a real place, so it's doubtful Mu is. But I always wondered where that sword was really from, who took it, and where it is now. Not as cool as an alien beach ball but it was a fun story when I was a kid.

I just wanted to update everyone. My AUNT is Gerri Betz and she took a turn for the worse last night and we moved her into hospice this afternoon. The family is paying its last respects so I dont imagine we will have her with us much longer. Just thought I would let eveyrone know. She is done with the flack and all she got for simply reporting it and trying to get answers. She has plenty of money so that wasnt the purpose. It simply is what it is and nobody knows what that is. My aunt Gerri says she knows where the sphere is to this day but she hasnt let us know more than that. I am sure others in the family know though.
  • @h0rriphic
Yeah the fact the government just didn’t outright take it and disappear the family/frame them for something terrible is by far the most shocking detail of this story.
  • This is quickly becoming one of my fave channels. The research and delivery are impeccable.
  • This applies not only to this video but for the whole channel: excellent storytelling and careful fact-checking => both entertaining and thought-provoking: this channel is a must!!! Thanks AJ and the team!

I remember this story from when it happened. It’s easy to see that no one should be trusted around mysterious things.
