No plane needed, from city centre to city centre, no passport and luggage controls, no waiting lines, no cramped spaces, just enjoying the countryside and relaxing.

Trenitalia definitely has an advantage with this service as they know how to compete. In Italy, NTV's Italo service has been keeping Trenitalia on their toes. Before that, they were your typical incumbent monopoly operator. The Frecciarossa service was always good, but with the advent of Italo, Trenitalia has had to step it up. It's a good time to be a European train traveler.

Frecciarossa is stunningly beautiful both inside and outside. This is pure Italian style at its best.
  • Bring the Frecciarossa to Germany, and show that Milan - Frankfurt - Copenhagen, Hamburg - Munich - Rome, Amsterdam - Munich - Venice, Berlin - Munich - Bologna via train, including meeting office and infrastucture, executive seating, and top-class services are much better than flying in a cramped airline seat, and waiting to board an aircraft. And it is much better for our climate! Keep growing the high-speed TEN infrastructure.
  • Once the Turin - Lyon high speed rail will be completed we will be able to travel between Milan and Paris in 4h. That for sure will make the train much more competitive.

I had the chance to travel in Executive on a Frecciarossa service before and I must say that in my opinion it's the best High speed rail service currently available in Europe.
  • Trenitalia is my favorite way to travel around Italy. I am glad that they are extending their service to France.

Example of the unique italian sense of style applied to high speed train. Certainly good news for us French travelers.
  • @holnrew
What a gorgeous train. Trenitalia really knows what it's doing

I always use the Frecciarossa between Milan and Naples. It's exactly the same service. It's fast, comfortable and always on time. You can actually travel from Milan to Lecce (heal of the boot) on one single Frecciarossa journey. I recommend doing that...it's quite a journey!

A very minor correction: while the first production run of the Frecciarossa ran from 2013 to 2017, last year Trenitalia ordered two more production runs: 19 to cover future Italian and French operations and 23 to cover the 2022 entry on the Spanish high speed railways. Therefore, new Frecciarossa 1000 trains are currently being built again.

These videos bring back some great memories of when I was a child and going to Sicily on a family holiday. In them days you could catch a train from Calais that would go right through to Palermo without changing. If you was unlucky you would have to change at Milan. The scenic routes through Switzerland were just simply stunning, and back then the 70`s most of the trains did not have sleepers. To get from London to Palermo took 3 days and 2 nights. Wonderful memories and wonderful trips.

Gorgeous report! I almost never watch train trip reports but this one popped up in my mostly aviation focused feed, and boy I enjoyed it. Very immersive, I think it's the word.
  • I’ve traveled many times in Executive Class between Milano and Firenze; Milano and Roma. It is simply THE BEST! There’s nothing else like it. Glad for this additional service/route so if the occasion arises I, without hesitation, will be onboard in Executive Class. Good luck SCNF … you’re going to need it! 😉

The big level-up for the high-speed trains in Italy happened when the private competition came to the market with the Italo trains ; before that the HS trains were similar to the TGV. The most valuable thing of these trains it the quiteness during the trip, compared to the constant rumbling of the planes; that makes even a 7hr trip very relaxing. In italy it actually disrupted the Rome-Milan flight line, now the HS trains are much preferred on that route.
