James Blake - a 30-year-old entrepreneur from Lisburn - was living the Insta-dream until someone scraped his accounts. He started getting messages from people accusing him of conning them out of tens of thousands of pounds.

As he sets out to try and get his face and name back, James discovers a dark and utterly heartless modern-day crime wave, where ruthless organised gangs are using the very latest technology to prey on our age-old desire for love, companionship and success, all to scam blameless victims out of money.

James’s attempt to find out more and get his online identity back takes him on an international journey, and he discovers that it’s not only those being conned who are the victims here - many of those carrying out the con are also suffering at the hands of the gangs behind this modern-day crime.

  • as someone that used to work at Meta, it’s kind of ironic that all of the jobs that are supposed to be moderating the content to take the profiles down are also located in those countries so maybe even though there’s policies to remove those accounts they don’t remove them because they’re kind of in working with the other companies that are scamming

Wow Vice, great job & well done ! …assuming the intent/purpose of this endlessly exuberant performative wealth montage was to make this otherwise regular guy seem insufferable, essentially ‘deserving’ even, of a suspected sudden downfall, failure, or even crime against him.
  • @Brimbles2
Ok, you can build cases and cases all you want but who’s going to push them through? Who’s going to prosecute? Which governments are going to take action and focus on this? And what agencies are going to raid, rescue, and confiscate?
  • @MoshMob

  • these beautiful women are real, this is tragic, I hate to see people losing faith in love. I will love you, I am having the worst time finding a decent woman, the last girl took 14k and we only ever kissed one time, talk about a lesson in life, I think I am finally understanding, I want to treat a lady right an even spoil her most of the time, however I will no longer be an open checking account, "do you have, can you, I need" Nope! I feel free lol, love is free, you cannot pay for it
  • Before my mom passed away she was being catfished and me and my family reached out to the reality show star that was used for profile and I wish he could have went this far to try and shut it down.

What we need is content ID on every post so that once something is uploaded first, every subsequent upload of that image will contain a watermark linking back to the original upload and clearly showing the reupload is not the original. Companies have this privilege with music and DMCAs but the ordinary public needs this protection as well! This technology already exists and any social media company not using it should be deemed legally complicit in identity theft crimes on their platforms.
