Ontario Northland’s Kapuskasing subdivision

This the full video chasing freight 313 from Cochrane to Hearst Ontario. The Kapuskasing subdivision was constructed in the year 1903 by the government and was ultimately integrated into CNR around 1920. The National Transcontinental Railway (NTR) was a government-built railway from Winnipeg, via Sioux Lookout, Kapuskasing, Cochrane and Québec City, to Moncton. The main reason of the NTR’s construction is to promote the colonization of Northern Ontario and to make another connection from Est-West Canada. In the year 1993 Canadian National Railway sold a part of the subdivision to Ontario Northland and abandoned the rest of the line on the Eastern part of Ontario. This was the Kapuskasing subdivision who got another chance at life, the Kapuskasing subdivision runs from Cochrane to Calstock(10 miles West of Hearst). In early 2000’s the Kapuskasing subdivision was in horrible condition with most sections being overgrown and subject to a 10MPH speed limit. Nowadays the Subdivision has finally been cared to and is now one of the Important Subdivision connecting CN and ONR freight from the Western side to the rest of the system.
It was also restricted to 4 axle units for most of its life under the ownership of Ontario Northland but just recently last year letting SD40’s and SD75i’s pull the heavy freight of Hearst.

I hope you enjoy this video, part 2 chasing 514 with 2202 on the lead will be released eventually when I get the time to edit it. This is definitely an interesting 136 mile chase not a lot of people have had the chance to do.
