This video is all about drawing eyes, and placing them in the head at any angle. One of the toughest challenges facing cartoonists, and comic artists, is how to get the eyes to sit properly in the head at different angles, without having to resort to reference. We also go over the ways that eyes open and close, and the changes that happen when we look in different directions. That has a bigger impact than you may think!

Nobody ever focuses on emotions or expressions caused by the mouth. Smiling etc changes the eyes dramatically. The demonstration/lesson was very good. Thanks

It’s really cool to see that even a seasoned artist who’s been drawing for decades doesn’t always get the proportions right on the first time

This dude is so badass. I still watch and re-watch his perspective video. The one where you place different characters on different planes and such. Great teacher. Very glad for his success.

It’s so hard to find someone you can feel yourself listening to easier than the rest. You keep it simple and demonstrate in a way that I can understand better, thank you

You're the sole reason why I am improving in art, well definitely there are other artists has well but after watching your tutorials my anatomy has greatly improved. I was a fan of your artwork even without knowing it was done by you, i still have that Superman poster which I got from comics. Thanks a lot.

Well this was an eye opener! Lol! I never tried drawing them this way! I will now! Thanx David for breaking it down!!💪🔥

Can't think of a better way to do this lecture. Thank you. We are so incredibly lucky to have an artist like you teach us. Incredible.
  • Aye, it’s great that your doing another one of these kinds of videos again. I could use a lecture on how to draw eyes since I don’t really think much about the eyes other than to make them look good enough
  • I applaud you for describing your process from a logical standpoint (e.g. the eyeball sits in a skull, therefore the socket is the basis, therefore the eyebrow follows along its upper rim). A lot of art instructors on YouTube struggle tremendously with conveying their information in a way that's feasible to somebody who just doesn't get it. Even understanding the structure of an eye, I've still tremendously struggled with grasping why it's laid out the way it is, and you've helped me alleviate some of these headscratchers. I think Andrew Loomis put this best when he compared constructing a figure/face to a carpenter measuring a board before cutting it; you just have to do it every time, if you want to get it right. Seriously, the best feeling an artist can have while studying is, "how could've I not figured this out on my own?" and I find myself thinking that all the time while watching your videos. Cheers.

After watching tons of videos on how to draw eyes, I finally found one that makes a lot of sense. Very well explained! Thank you so much!!! :)
  • These videos have made me a much better artist, thanks for making these it’s a huge help.
  • @ScilexGuitar
you make it seem so easy. I can understand and draw the eye as a sphere in the beginning, but constructing the head like that, placing the features, its very difficult for some reason
  • It's really very interesting and I will have to remember and try it sometimes. Even through I am used to draw eyes in completly different shape, it never hurts to be able to do things differently and understand them better. Thank you, Mr. Finch
  • This method works the best for me. I really struggled finding actual eye tutorials that dont just say ''then add the detail'' . Lots of kisses!!!

This video was incredible. I came here to learn how to draw eyes, left with that and more. Beautifully taught man! 👏
  • Brilliantly explained as usual. Thanks David you are my favourite comic illustrator for the last 15 years I have been following your art. Thank you for all your help. 👍🏽
  • @sethlanki6255
This was really helpful! I don't know why I've never thought to use crosshairs on the eyeballs for pupil placement
  • @Beetletreuse
This helped me a lot. I've watched a lot of videos, read a lot of books, took art classes, etc. but this video has had a drastic change on how I draw faces. I just drew a guy face for the first time without a reference that actually looks like a dude and it's my favorite thing I've drawn in years. Next step is learning how to draw expressions better. Thanks!
