  • What a load of crap. If you need to add a 5% surcharge on the bill, then raise the prices by 5%. I would NEVER go back to a restaurant that added hidden fees onto your order. This is clearly deceptive. What is the point of having all these regulations in California if business owners can just deceive their customers.

"Tips" use to be earned, now they are demanded

Hey, Bay Area restaurants, I've stopped eating out at your establishments because these junk fees are out of hand. If you really care about benefits and a living wage for your workers, just incorporate it into the menu price instead of adding separate line items and pretending it's not your fault. 😒

They're afraid of "sticker shock"... So they just hide it elsewhere on the check? Total BS. Raise the price to cover the costs and let the customer decide.
  • How come these businesses don't have a robbery surcharge for all the loons that try to rob them?

Thank You CA. Seeing a restaurant charge of $4.00 for a fountain soda changed my diet. I simply eat from home and fund my vacation budget.

Eat at home has become a priority and once in a while eat out. Once in a great while. Can’t afford it anymore in these times

Transparent is the key. Add the surcharge to the food price, I will never go back to those restaurants adding surcharge to the bill.

I eat out less and less with the sales tax and tips add up to about 30%.

Until early 2010s, we used to eat out everyday for lunch and the weekend was out eating Bf, lunch or bf, dinner. Fast forward few years, now we make our own bf, lunch and dinner. We save literally thousands of dollars between 2 of us. Restaurants have become too expensive.

Just stop eating out people. I have. The food is literal crap these days, service is bad because they don’t have enough staff, and the cost will continue to rise in order to pay people just to survive. I paid almost $20.00 for SANDWICH, a regular old Roast Beef Sandwich. Imagine how many Roast Beef Sandwiches I could make at home for $20.00! I get it, people who work should be paid a living wage. But isn’t it bizarre that the US has this issue? Weird huh that the UK doesn’t ask for tips to supplement salaries. Maybe America has too many restaurants& Bars anyway.
  • Eating out the server is supposed to wow you; quick service, courteous, EARN your tip.

They're going to surcharge themselves out of business. The guy who said he doesn't want to shock their customers with increasing prices, so he hides it in the surcharge is unscrupulous af! Be upfront about what you are charging your customers or get out of business.

I stopped eating at restaurants by about 80%. Sucks cause I want to support them but simply can’t afford it anymore.

It should be mandated that all surcharges need to be on a big poster with explanation of what they are for. And the poster needs to be placed at the entrance of the restaurant. And if the restaurant has a website, it needs to be at the very top in big bold words. You should never be surprised when you enter a restaurant and sit down.
