Buddha Describes 5 Hindrances That May Stop us From Living Up to Our Full Potential

Published 2023-07-29
"The Five Hindrances" is a concept from Buddhist Psychology that originated 2,500 years ago when the Buddha began teaching it.

"There are two mistakes along the way to mastery: not starting it, and not going all the way." — Buddha

Originally, Buddha taught The Five Hindrances concept as barriers to meditation and reaching Nirvana. In more recent times, many have taught that these Five Hindrances can get in the way of mindfulness, inner peace, self-mastery, and reaching our full potential.

☀️ The Five Hindrances are:
1) Sensory Desires: seeking pleasure through one of the five senses – sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch. Also referred to as “the wanting mind.”

2) Anger and Aversion: ill will toward another, oneself, or some type of experience; the “not wanting mind.”

3) Restlessness and Worry: the inability to rest in the present moment; feelings of agitation.

4) Sloth and Topor: thoughts and feelings related to boredom, low energy, and inactivity.

5) Doubt: excessive skepticism or indecision.
