The two GOATs of the present era Magnus Carlsen and Vishy Anand were given an Evans Gambit position from the 1889 World Championship Match between Chigorin and Steinitz. 10 moves were made on the board and in the next 10 moves Magnus Carlsen showed his dominance on the board. This format highlights the superior chess understanding of Magnus over his contemporaries. In my view, he is the GOAT of modern chess, even better than Fischer, Kasparov and Karpov, who were phenomenally successful because of their great opening preparation. Magnus, on the other hand, can outplay anyone from any dynamically equal (even slightly inferior) position due to his superior understanding of the game.
