We’ve been taught to think of fats and oils as a necessary evil—the unhealthy part of anything we eat and the stuff needed to keep food from sticking to the pot. In reality, nothing could be further from the truth. Fat is essential for health, but it’s also confusing. There are so many different kinds of fat; some, we are told, are good, and some are bad. So, what’s actually true?

In today’s episode of my series I’m calling Health Bites, I am talking all about fats and oils—which ones you should be eating, and which ones you need to avoid for optimal health.

This episode is brought to you by Paleovalley and Athletic Greens.

Dr. Hyman keeps getting more youthful and handsome over time. I can tell he practices what he preaches. This man glows ✨
  • Love the simplicity, wisdom and humor of Dr Hyman! Such a good teacher of what is really healthy! Thank you, Dr Hyman!
  • One thing many people don't realize is the Mediterranean diet is so healthy and people in this geographic zone live so long isn't because of the pasta and pizza they eat. It's mainly because of sun and soil in the regions. Volcanic nutrient rich soils being absorbed by plants and animals. Also people get a lot of vitamin D from sun. The people for example in Italy eat a lot of fish foods. They used to eat more beef, chicken and pork but because of cost they've reduced it. Lower stress level than most places in the western world. La dolce vita.
  • I found your Eat fat, get thin book at a thrift store! I was so stoked! This is TIMELESS! You are such a good egg! Love you!
  • It’s so frustrating!!! One Dr shows tests showing processed oils as dangerous to our health. Another Dr says “eat all you want! It’s healthy!” Another Dr says “eat coconut oil! It’s healthy!” Another Dr says “tests show that the sat fat in coconuts are dangerous and should be limited.” Is this just a case of “follow the advice you most want to hear? “ I tend to follow the advice when they show the actual studies rather than talking about them. I really respect you! But isn’t it true that getting oils from whole unprocessed foods is healthier than pouring them from a bottle? Just as in politics in this country, how do we “know” what is true? Studies show Dairy is good for you. But the studies are bought and paid for by the dairy industry. This is all so frustrating!! 🤦‍♀️

Just wanted to thank you for all the great advice you have suggested to keep us healthy, I certainly have incorporated most of your suggestions and have benefited exceedingly.

In Thailand there are no huge palm oil plantations thank god, Indonesia has destroyed enough of the environment for both of us. It's only recently that coconut oil has become widely available in the shops, most of it was previously exported to the USA. Still not affordable to most, but the good news is that many render down their own lard.

You will laugh but most of my life I ate an excess of mostly butter and stayed mostly lean but never went truly medium or high in weight...and got ridiculed for the way I ate. Still the same 10lb range in my 50's. Hooray Dr Hyman!
  • I love eggs and butter. Avocados are my fav source of fat. Nuts too. SEED OILS not vegetable oils. corn, rapeseed, soy, all bad oils.

Dr mark pleaee make video on toddlers foods for them what to do to make them healthy and smart
  • @raduna2106
What about saturated fat and MS? For MS patients is recommended to eat very little of it as it’s allegedly linked to the disease progression and worsening your condition over all. Some people decide to be plant based with fish and seafood diet. Thank you for your opinion!
  • Ya know Mark M.D., it occurred to me one day when I was cleaning the sticky cooking oil residue off of the stove and frying pan, that those oils, sticky as they are, breaking down, break down the body, on some level, of this paradoxical world of meeting the need. I suspected it was those sticky residues, as many suggest, do help to form Gaul Stones and even plaques in the top side of arteries and veins, as oils tend to float to the top of H2O solutions, related to how oils float on water. And so the question is do those oils accumulate in the top of the aortic branch, or even accumulating the head. And in observation, since I now try to avoid such oils, test show normal lipid ranges but for the good HDL fats were a little low. Its truly important to view each soul as valuable and worthy of study to determine ways of error in the food chain and other modalities, much like you faithfully do, of the spirit of preserving life, as a doctor. It is truly a noble profession meeting the need, of care and quality of life, continuing in medical research as you and others do. Thank you for sharing.
  • But we refine our own good oils with high heat(fat) I've been experimenting with low heat cooking(fat) and have made a lot of very tasty dishes but it takes a long time but it helps with my intermediate fasting... This oxidation is worrying me a Lil ... The obvious thing is that we complain about processed oils with high heat processing and yet when we process it at that level in our own cooking we look the other way are we missing something... Am I now processing my own oil and turning them into bad oils...
  • So Dr. Hyman one of my favorite oat milk has sunflower oil in, is it ok to consume once a day?
  • Is extra-virgin cod, liver oil, healthy for you? Could you please do a video on it I’ve been taking it for years. The brand is Rosetta, I haven’t taken it for about a year and I’m already feeling the difference especially in my mind. I know it has something to do with omega-3’s, but I get them. I just seem to do so much better if I take the extra virgin color royale every day, even though I know about extra-virgin olive oil, and the right one to take or use because in America, they’re not all created Heico for sure but I do know about the olives they use to make the very best extra-virgin olive oil, and I do know also that for batches of olive oil, they use one type of oil in the whole extra-virgin olive oil I believe the best one is from Spain, then Greece then Italy maybe I was shocked on that one when I did the research I thought Italy would be number one for sure, but I found out it’s not it Hass to do with the type of olives used and not mixing a combination of olives to make the extra-virgin olive oil It’s a type of olive that’s really bitter and you can’t really eat them, I would really love to see a video explaining to people about extra-virgin olive oil, and the polyphenols because I know a lot of people they won’t listen to me about extra-virgin olive oil they don’t realize they’re getting I’ve seen it in my family, extra-virgin olive oil it’s mixed with different oils And they use it like it’s going out of style and it worries me, I truly and I think everybody would agree if you could do a video on extra-virgin olive oil also and how to look for the right kind I think you might have a video on it, but it doesn’t really explain The way you usually explain things, anyway, thank you I love your videos now I’m with the show I haven’t watched it all yet. I just woke up, thank you so much for making these videos. I know they’re not the easiest thing to do and I want to honor you for doing them bless you.
