A basic introduction to Protracker. Loading a sample, editing notes and using the position editor.

If you're already familiar with Protracker I suggest you skip to the next episode.

Correction: Since the making of this video the "Load sample as raw" dialogue was removed.

Additional info: To load another sample and keep the first one: click the small arrow-up button next to the label "sample" and load the next sample from the Disk Op. I'll also show this in the next episode.

To delete notes, use the delete button (Fn+backspace on mac) and to delete numbers, just overwrite them with zeroes.

hey hey!! i must thank you for making this tutorial (and the other ones), i have been really enjoying this program to start creating music, your content has been helping me a lot too! im still lrearning the basics of music in general but im glad i went for a simpler program, complex DAWs overwhelm me sometimes and is hard to choose what you really want to do. but ever since ive met protracker ive been wanting to start a jungle music album project using this tracker! oh and forgot to mention that i also felt really attached to this program when i discovered that one of my childhood songs was made in it! (Azazel -Can't Stop Coming). and yeah! i have been listening to your tracks and really enjoying your work! keep doing what you love!!

I wish someone could have shown us these things 20 year ago, really helpful video which might just get me to try tracking at some point

I was not familiar with Protracker or trackers in general and after trying my hands at FL last year (which ended up in an OST for an indie game developed by a friend for charity, still in production), I found your tutorial a few months ago and started trying out Protracker 2.3 on my A1200. Your production and ability to explain in such a clear way how to use protracker has inspired me a LOT and eased my way into .mods and tracking. The feeling of absolute control over the sound I'm making (together with the intrinsic limitations of the hardware) has made my journey much more fun, much more productive, and eventually made me able to produce much better music I was not even thinking I was capable of. You're a star <3

Five years later and second time around, but better late than never! This is a very nice set of videos. You go through how to use Protracker with very clear explanations and at just the right speed. Thank you!

Perfect timing! I have just become interested in PT and have been looking for tut videos. There were none until you put these up. Please keep making them even if they are just a few minutes long with only one simple lesson.

Very nice tutorial. This comment sums up for episodes 00-03, all of which I just have viewed. Very inspiring way of working with the effects. I will have lots of use for these tutorials, so please keep them streaming!

Stumbled on this playlist while trying to figure out what EFx is, and oh man, this tutorial looks excellent!
  • Thank you so much for this tutorial series! I grabbed ProTracker after trying out Scream Tracker and FastTracker II, so I got to try it out today. I would've been completely lost if it weren't for this first video. Now, I have every ST-XX disk's contents from Internet Archive, and some direction on how to use it all!

I'm gonna watch and enjoy all your episodes. If only I had this in 1992....

  • @robikz
Thanks for the vid, I had some trouble figuring the program out. Now it makes much more sense :)
  • Wow! Suddenly protracker appears comprehensible!! I've played out with vividtracker a bit with less successful results. I think this tutorial will might change that! :)

In reply to Last Ninja: Tracks 1 & 4 are always 100% panned to the left and tracks 2 & 3 to the right. There is no way to pan. It's often referred to as Amiga Stereo and sounds terrible (especially in headphones) if the musician didn't bother to place the samples carefully. This is why modules are often played in mono. I think 15% stereo separation is nice, and it reassembles the stereo separation of old TV:s and monitors where the speakers often were right next to each other. In the PT Clone, there is an .ini file with settings where you can change the stereo separation, but the module will still be 100% panned when played somewhere else.
