It's been a while since my last Sonic video here on Lost Bits, but with the recent release of Sonic Origins, I wanted to go back and finish up one of the last classic Sonic (or not Sonic) games on the channel: Knuckles Chaotix. In this video we'll take a look at various Knuckles Chaotix prototype builds as well as the earliest one in which it looks like Sonic and Tails were originally going to be the stars of the show! Hope you enjoy the video!

Sonic Crackers is likely a bad translation of the word "clackers" which is a toy that has two balls on a string, the main mechanic of the game. Ls and Rs are often mixed up because they make a really similar sound in Japanese.

17:52 funny enough, you can actually go into negative rings in the actual Knuckle's Chaotics by using the "recall partner" move while having less than 10 rings
  • @PJWooperIsBack
I love how you can make the characters arms go full circle while holding a magic ring, it’s quite C R A C K I N G to see
  • @SonicTheCutehog
The negative ring thing can actually happen in the final game. Recall your partner while having less than 10 rings and you'll go into negative rings. Keep doing it until you reach -100 rings and you'll get a Game Over.

2:15 You are absolutely correct in your assertion; "Studium" is definitely a misspelling of "Stadium". Knuckles Chaotix is notorious for having, uh, "interesting" misspellings during its development: Stadium/Studium, Mighty/Nat, Heavy/Heaby, Nootropic/Newtrogic; for a native Japanese speaker, these words have similar pronunciations, and thus, the translator — who likely wasn't a native English-speaker — romanji-nized these words as such. We also reviewed magazines in which developers were interviewed and mentioned a game in development called Sonic Stadium at the time. 6:57 We have evidence that this level was reworked into Techno Tower; several level layout chunks match up perfectly with the one in the final game, not to mention the fact that both levels share the same ID both in Crackers and Chaotix. 7:09 Additionally, we also have evidence to support this level was reworked into Speed Slider: again, some layout chunks match with the latter in the final game. 16:06 In this very prototype (1207), if you play as the character in the second slot, you get an orange Knuckles who can jump higher than any other character in the game and who can literally fly like Tails (you need to patch a byte in the ROM and activate some PAR codes in order for him to not crash the game when he touches the ground as soon as the level begins, though). 18:05 You can go into negative rings in the final game too; since calling your partner consumes rings, they had to think of a way to allow players to be able to call their partners even without rings instead of, you know, allowing players to call their partners whenever felt like for free (which was thankfully corrected in Sonic Advance 3). But there's a catch: if you go under -40 rings, you automatically lose the level. What a stupid mechanic!
  • Crackers is most likely a misspelling of clackers, as clackers seems to be the inspiration for the ring mechanic
  • @HyperStormH
I found the Jam-Out mode here very interesting, as there’s also a Jam-Out mode in Toe Jam & Earl for the Mega Drive. Equally as fun to mess around with there.

fun fact: the japenese title is jsug chaotix, meaning that it is canon that knuckles doesn't lead the chaotix. if fact, mighty is more of the leader from the japenese manual, which is considered canon, but since knuckles was more recognizable, everyone else it had knuckles in the title, making him the star everywhere else. considering the canon all around the world is the same now, this means that knuckles didn't lead the chaotix, mighty did.
  • @ExaltNick
I'm absolutely livid we live in a world without a game called 'Sonic Crackers'. Objectively hilarious name
  • @_SSGB_
Pretty sure crackers is a bad transliteration of clackers, the ring band mechanic is clearly based on clackers so that would make sense.
  • Speaking from a Development aspect. By the looks of things. Sonic and Tails was used as place holder Characters while the development team was ironing out the Characters and cast. So Sonic probably did become Mighty. The first crackers game you showed was probably at the earliest stage of development when the tiles and layout was being developed. The flat gray tiles was probably a look at the level layout team placeholder tiles for level building. Also the 3d world was probably going to be a street or surface level with the side view levels being floating Levels while the game was being planned out and the mechanic didn't work out and that's why when you fall you end up at the top down world.
  • @HowPettyful
This build was dumped/released a day after i was born :0 Always been one of my favorite protos in general, so interesting yet relatively barren
  • The “cool” text is meant to be used for the “Cool Bonus” usually given at the end of levels
  • @zigazav1
Considering Tails' canon age, I'm guessing those high pitched voice clips were meant for Tails in some way.
  • @GoombaKungFu
It's cool to see an obscure game get such attention! it's crazzy to think that games can be VERY different as to even have a main character be entierly different. Keep up the good work!!!
  • @yoshikoopa9545
I feel like those unused voice clips of that person yelling in sonic crackers kind of sounds like Tails imo? Maybe tails would tell you what to do in certain situations? Who knows.
