A few years back I was with a friend at an LA Porsche dealer where he had purchased his car. Next door was a Bentley dealer. I was looking over their used cars and twiddling my thumbs. The salesman came out and said "jump in". It was a Continental gtc. He didn't even flash my license. Directed me on the freeway and told me to give it the beans. What an amazing car! When we got to the off-ramp he told me to "slam on the brakes with both feet at the stop sign, like somebody threw a baby in front of a car". I did so and the car came to a very composed halt. It was astounding. Never bought it and the salesman never cared. I think he just wanted to get out of the showroom. Great memory. Great car.

Tony is not in this video but weirdly I can hear his voice and his laughter all the way through 😂
  • So rare to hear a dealer acknowledge the high cost of maintaining cars it is selling. I’d do business with these guys.

I have worked for a Bentley service specialist for 4 years, selling Gen 1 & 2 Continentals. If the car is serviced according to the logbook service guidelines, then mechanical issues are rare. I have never seen the doors off a car even for "engine out" repairs.

The Bentley is so you Sam. Go for it. Thanks for the CLEAN content man, I really appreciate you.

You’ve wanted a Continental since I started watching in the 4C days. Just finally go for it, man.

If you saw the carwow video on the most expensive car to keep on the road . It’s that Conti GT. Had a friend who had one , cost 10/20k per year in repairs . So one to avoid

Before you spotted that Aston Martin in the carpark, I was thinking that you should consider a Rapide as a daily. It has four seats, it's practical and it will be a comfortable grand tourer, plus they are within budget (I think). Also, a later model DB9 could be a good comparison to the Bentley as well. Perhaps a Virage or DB9 GT is stretching it a bit (around 60k), but the clean elegant facelift design is gorgeous. Overall, the Bentley is a great car, but I think you'll get a more friendly smile from the public in an Aston. Another car to compare could also be the Maserati GranTurismo, as I'm sure you'll get full support from Vicki on that one!

Love seeing the roller coaster of emotions you go through when looking at buying a car. It validates that I’m not the only one 😂

Sam, I had a phase 2 V8. Full disclosure I did not daily it but used it as a weekend car. I traded it in on a Ferrari which I love but I do miss the Bentley . All of the things you point out in the video—quality of the interior, ride, exhaust noise made it a fantastic car with a sense of occasion every time I drove it and I definitely would consider another one. I think you will find that if you stretched yourself into a higher mileage phase 2 that you would have few regrets especially if you can find an aftermarket warranty that covers the suspension, turbos and electronic bits. Also the v8 gets pretty good highway mileage compared to the w12

Mostly VW Audi group parts.....a bit of cross referencing for part numbers will save you a fortune!

Im so glad you did this. I was given a chance to buy a 2007 continental flying spur for £7999. It had one issue, it was a none starter - the starter motor had been diagnosed to be the issue. I still thought this would be a great bargain for a car I can use to comfortably cruise up to the football games on the weekend in. The excitement very shortly came to an end when I had quotes from £4,500 to as high as £8k for a starter motor change 😱 then I looked at the maintenance and common issues and it would probably be the best way to go bankrupt for a working class person like me. I know the cars not aimed at people like me but, a Bentley for £8k sounded great! My research and speaking to a couple of owners having brought the phase 1 w12’s have spent more than what they paid(£33k each) for the cars in their 5 year ownership. 😮

Sam mate, we have a Panamera GTS Sport Turismo, it´s my wife´s every day driver. It has a V8 petrol, that we achieve around 20-21mpg in. We bought it for the same as this Bentley, 65.000 EUR with 40.000kms on it (2021 model year). It is the best car we´ve ever had. I´d definitely look into one of them, or even a 4S E-hybrid. Those are amazing too!

Huge fan of the Conti, would love to watch a whole series on these. And if something goes wrong you'll have content for the channel, and if everything's perfect you won't have huge bills - win win!
  • @brianiswrong
While at 58 i will never be in financial postion to own a £30k car, i would love to see you testing a rapide S, because i have always thought they seem a nice idea, V12 with 2 occasional rear seats and an aston badge for way cheaper than any FF

I have a phase 2 Continental GT V8 (twin turbo) here in Australia with 31,000 miles. Since the engine is really Audi, many of the parts of the car under the skin are Audi or even VW.The trick is knowing which ones. Any bespoke Bentley parts are expensive, especially here in Australia as they come from Crewe. But with a knowledgeable after market European car specialist, these cars are not too expensive to own and run. My service people use Liqui Moly oils and genuine VAG parts and the Continental is a happy car.
