Recently, Michael Steranka gave a few remarks to DotEsports regarding the Remote Raid Pass nerf, and stated their goals for that nerf were achieved. I personally think that they still missed the whole point on why Pokémon GO players were so upset about the nerf. Let's talk about this.

Pokémon Go is a 2016 augmented reality (AR) mobile game developed and published by Niantic in collaboration with The Pokémon Company for iOS and Android devices. A part of the Pokémon franchise, the game is the result of a collaboration between Niantic, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company. It uses the mobile device GPS to locate, capture, battle, and train virtual creatures, called Pokémon, which appear as if they are in the player's real-world location. The game is free to play; it uses a freemium business model and supports in-app purchases for additional in-game items. The game launched with around 150 species of Pokémon, which had increased to around 500 by 2019.

Pokémon Go was released to mixed reviews; critics praised the concept, but criticized technical problems. It was one of the most used and profitable mobile apps in 2016, having been downloaded more than 500 million times worldwide by the end of the year. It is credited with popularizing location-based and AR technology, promoting physical activity, and helping local businesses grow due to increased foot traffic. However, it attracted controversy for contributing to accidents and creating public nuisances. Various governments expressed concerns about security, and some countries regulate its use. By early 2019, the game had over a billion global downloads, grossing over $3 billion in revenue. The game also had over 147 million monthly active users as of May 2018.

  • My local community collapsed after the remote raid nerf. It was so hard to get players to coordinate showing up to raids. However, my local community would happily assist remotely if a community member was willing to invite to a raid. There were still players who came in person to raid hours, but several community members just joined remotely. Since our local gyms are spread out, cars are required to reach them in any reasonable amount of time. As such, it is difficult coordinating a whole car procession to gyms for raid hours. It was much easier for players to just assist remotely. Anyway, the former local community that had been going since the start died after the remote raid nerf. All of the leaders stopped playing and the lack of leadership led to the dissolving of the whole community. I have been desperately trying to revitalize the community through campfire. While it has been growing slowly, it is a hollow shell of what it used to be. My community still only meets up for raid days or raid hours. There is no longer any coordination of just random raids that pop up throughout the week. My local community still has not recovered from the remote raid pass nerf. So many community veterans have completely quit in my local community

For god sake, this has nothing to do with getting out and "exploring." News flash! Niantic lied 🙄 You can narrow down the remote raid nerf to two simple words: Location data. Anything else they tell you is just rhetoric.

I hate the implication that people are too lazy to go out and walk around. People have jobs, school, and families to take care of, and there are so many people with disabilities who would need to remote raid. More accessible remote raids would mean more people have incentives to host raids in person too. I would argue it’s actually against the original mission to make the remote passes so expensive

Honestly, whomever made this decision needs to spend a few weeks in a rural area and see how the game doesn't play the way it does like it does in San Francisco to understand why Remote Raiding really helps the game out and gets more people playing.

If they honestly think nerfing these was an 'accomplishment', then this video is a clear example of the community saying the opposite.
  • I work overnights. I’d raid with overseas players throughout the night; until raid nerf. We have no local community to raid with. The nerf has saved me a ton of money. 😂
  • I spent 4 months living in Tokyo and started playing Pokémon go again after stopping for 7 and half years (literally played one month when it first came out) because I saw that everyone was playing the game on the streets. I actually enjoyed it so much, joined many in person events, met so many Japanese people and made some friends. Recently I came back to my small city in my country and I knew that the situation would have been different but, oh my god, the game is unplayable. In some areas there’s a huge lack of poke stops, making it literally impossible to get the basic resources and of course, no one ever raids, it’s always me and my 2 other devices beating 5* raids, never seen anyone else doing any kind of raids in 3 weeks I spent here. I think raids are the cool thing about pogo, the thing that gives you dopamine after you beat it and you wish for a 100iv or a shiny. Without this mechanic the game feels dead tbh.

I think they should change the way raids work, it would help rural players if they are able to go to a gym and join a raid but instead of a local lobby you are able to join like a global lobby and still use your normal raid passes
  • @Diadas66
They really will never get it, they are missing a huge thing a happy player base is a player base that will be more agreeable to future things, niantic will just not listen
  • @DeathSniper4201
I honestly haven’t seen more raiders in person… since the nerf to raiding I’ve seen nothing but an increase in spoofers.. have they done anything about spoofing? No. So if we chose to spend money on remote raid passes or “pay to win” imo what’s the harm if it brings them money and we’re not spoofing like a huge amount of the player base that I see now.
  • @noesoto6954
I wonder why Niantic has not made Go Battle League “in person only”, after all their main focus is to have people go out, explore and meet other trainers.
  • @ThomasThe3rd44
Ever since they changed it the hype for me personally fainted and about a few months later I completely stopped. Raiding was a big part for me especially in a mor rural area
  • @Silvery1313
I went out MORE with remote raid passes. There has not been any increase in in person raids here, all raiding has just dropped off. I never see anybody doing the raids in my neighborhood on Wed nights anymore. Our local community has definitely shrunk, not grown. I now play by setting my phone upside down so the battery screen saver kicks in and let GPS drift hatch my eggs. I don't know why I'm playing, these last two events have been horrible.
  • I'm still salty about it tbh, its kinda ruined the game for me, I still play but not as much and I rarely do in person raids - there just aren't enough players in my community, so I miss out on a lot, ex raids for instance and in person raid exclusives.
  • one idea to save local raids is to remove the timer, let people join for the duration of the raid timer and when people want to start they can click ready and go
  • @clue942
I live in a major city and just went to a rural city for vacation. I clearly see the difference. In 4 days I could only do three 5* raids because they were so far spread out. Not to mention the lack of pokestops. The game was virtually unplayable. Remote raid passes are cruicial to enjoy that aspect of the game in those areas
  • @spoon8142
Remote raiding did make it easier to participate. For instance, everyone has different schedules, so, I could be at work and get an invite while on break and participate, then, in the evening provide the same opportunity to friends working second shift. Friends who r more casual players that don't participate enough to get involved or look for community, easier to send invites especially during raid hour and they live in another time zone, not to mention rural and disabled players. Some of us still actively GO, daily all the time. All niantic did by nerfing it was upsetting the more hardcore players and losing the more casual players. If that was what they hoped to achieve, mission accomplished
  • @matt3608
Does niantic not like money ?? The remote raiding is nothing but money in the bank for them
  • What mission accomplished, as in trying to kill the game, and making a bunch of people leave? Would like to see Mega Lucario come out before it dies at least.
  • @TheJavie06
Sounds like they are enjoying eating an onion thinking it's an apple.
