I Bought an X5 Diesel With 450K KMS - Bad Engine? Let's Diagnose It!

PART 2 IS HERE:    • Shop Said My 450,000 KM X5 Needs a Ne...

Well, I did it again. I ended up buying another vehicle I REALLY did not need, at least it's another BMW!

This one in particular is a 2011 BMW X5 with the legendary M57 diesel engine. I know what you're thinking, diesel? really!? Truth be told, if I had to pick ONE single vehicle to drive the rest of my life, it would be a fully deleted e70 X5 diesel.

This one has some goodies and a laundry list of maintenance that has already been done along side a full delete and tune, the transmission does not have an xHP flash though, yet..... not yet....

Stay tuned and see if we got an amazing deal, or another lemon!

(I'm starting to dislike lemons)

What a fun platform to have, seriously. I've had mine for over 150,000km now at 350,000km. Full delete, stage 2.9. Other than some annoying water damage on injector 6, i've had no problem at all with it. Ended up with a little custom metal plate right above cyl 5, 6 to move water away from there. Problem free for the past 3 years.

found this video by chance, very good content i hope this channel grows!

This is seriously an underrated channel. You're great man

Great educational video! Unfortunately those piezo(ish) injectors are quite pricey new (I think something like 600CAD for bosch by the time its at your door) and hard to come by used as everyone just snaps off the return lines when servicing them... but at least its not an engine! Excited for the next video!
  • What a great video, and good explaining. Does this x5 still has the original turbo and gearbox?

I hope you put the clip back onto the new fuel filter, also that starter sounds very weak. I would just swap cylinder 6 injector with a Bosch reman on rock auto, then replace the rain tray/cowls with the newer ones. Water getting into the cylinder 6 injector and destroying it is a very common issue.

Nice video! Just FYI - SoH of battery= State-of-Health. It sounds you need a new starter motor (or rebuilt) as it was cranking way too slow. Do NOT 100% rely on ISTA and the smoothness test to tell you which cylinder/injector is wrong. The issue with injector does not "clear up" itself. It is due to higher RPM where the smoothness gets better just because of engine speed, so the "corrections" which DDE needs to apply to each injector are not that high per injector. I'd start by swapping out the injectors just to ensure the issue follows, then remove them all and get them cleaned. Make sure you note which one comes from which cylinder (they are coded to the DDE). Once all are out, I'd perform a cylinder compression test as well, just to know if there is potentially lower compression. BTW, at this mileage I'd change the chain.

You'll need to pull the intake to do swirl flap delete. Should do egr delete at the same time so you dont get more carbon build up. Diesel injectors are cheap to get cleaned. If it was original fuel filter all injectors probably need to be cleaned. Because youre in cold climate would need to make sure glow plugs and glow plug module are ok as well. These engines can do a million kms, its the trans and turbos that'll wear out first.

Had worked on my friends M57 X5, same ol cyl 6 injector, i recommended getting a pneumatic slide hammer to remove the injector. The carbon buildup is crazy nearly impossible to remove those injectors and worst case is replacing the head.

They use piezo injectors so they cant be refurbed unfortunately like solenoid type. The injector is probably leaking. Would be a good idea to see if the injector on 6 is leaking
  • @BMWBAS
Replace your rain trays also. Or you’ll be changing injector number 5 and 6 ago.
  • I bought 2012 250k km full stock for 3k$ year ago . Didn't start work on it

take out the intake,it might be a swirl flap in the chambers, broken.
  • @Quick2004
Swap m57 engine in to 1 series 👍

Sorry guys but you need to consult some specialists - you dont understand diesels engine at all. 6 cilinder does not work almost at all. By diagnostic you see cilinder 6 have lost efficiency if number is above 0
