I bought this 2002 Yamaha YZ250 for $1,200. The seller told me that he had installed a brand-new Hinson clutch, but "wasn't sure" if he did it properly. He had also bought a few new parts for the bike including a new Wiseco piston that came with the bike. Join me as I try to get this old 2 stroke running!

I work at Lectron, that should be a simple fix. The bogging is from the metering rod being too lean. Either the previous owner messed with it too much or the motor has an air leak somewhere (or bad reeds). Try setting the idle screw to about 2 turns from all the way in and seeing where it idles. It will probably be very high. Then turn the rod clockwise until it idles normally. Keep in mind that the flat side of the metering rod must face the engine side of the carb. You make adjustments by threading it into the slide, then reorient it by pushing it into the slide and turning. If that doesn’t work, the bike definitely has an air leak. Good luck and definitely reach out to lectron if you need more help!
  • you can definitely tell at some point that bike was someone's pride and joy
  • Had the same issue with my sons rm85. Pulled the carb, cleaned all the crud out and she was good to go. Yay for a new bike project! I just picked up an 84 200x atc myself

I always have to laugh when I imagine your girlfriend doing some housework or especially speaking with someone on her phone and at once she hears a fricking YZ 250 start and rev in the garage🤣 Amazing Videos Kincade!

Did my guy just risk a wrist pin to the bottom of the motor?? lol. nice job fixing her up!
  • Lectrons are great carbs IF you know what you are doing with them. Based upon the other issues you have found, I would not be surprised if the metering rod length is all whacked out. Contact Lectron and they will give you the starting length for the rod. After that, check the float heights as someone else has already stated, getting the carb back to baseline will be the first step.
  • I love them older yz250s they are so fun when they are running right I have one myself so I’m really excited this bike transform

I ended up picking up a 1995 yz125 a couple weeks ago. The seller had done a top end in 2018 and supposedly has put maybe 20 hours on it. It had some weird hot start problems, so I started to take things apart to look for the problem. Turns out there's scoring on the piston and it probable needs another top end. Super nervous to start working on it as this is my first time fully wrenching on a bike, but your videos help with the confidence quite a bit. Cheers kincade!

great work! one thing i never saw nor heard you mention was fuel. i always dump the fuel out on any machine i get, cle3an the carb, note the jetting and put in new fuel. i always run 32:1 maxima K2 with LL100 fuel. works 100% every time :) repalce the lectron. very common with those. also check the reeds.
  • Video 6 of trying to convince Kincade to do a subscriber rebuild 😂😂 KTM 125sx 🎉🎉🎉 congrats on the new bike bro!

.. Awesome buy and fix!! I have many leftover parts from an '01 yz250 that I parted out .. carb, right outer case, other items. If you need anything give a shout, I might have it. Lectrons are great carbs.. I have them on my KTM 200 and CR 500. Bike is lean.. Lectron should have a starting measurement if you call them.. start there then make adjustments ...
